New Hampshire man arrested for role in Cliven Bundy standoff

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Federal authorities on Thursday arrested a New Hampshire man for his role in a standoff by Nevada ranchers opposed to federal control of public lands.

Gerald DeLemus, of Rochester, was named in an indictment in Nevada as a "mid-level leader" and organizer of a conspiracy to recruit, organize, train and provide support to armed men and other followers of rancher Cliven Bundy. DeLemus, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and tea party activist, last year signed on as a member of presidential candidate Donald Trump's New Hampshire veterans coalition. A July news release posted on Trump's website listed DeLemus as a co-chair.

Bundy was arrested last month on charges stemming from a 2014 armed standoff with federal officials in Nevada who were rounding up Bundy's cattle over unpaid grazing fees.

DeLemus, 61, was arrested Thursday and was due to appear federal court in Concord later in the day. Calls to DeLemus' court-appointed attorney and his wife, Republican state Rep. Susan DeLemus, were not immediately returned.

Trump campaigner and Cliven Bundy's son arrested over 2014 Nevada standoff

Davey Bundy and Jerry DeLemus, New Hampshire campaign co-chair
for Trump, each face prosecution for roles in armed conflict over federal
land restrictions

A son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and a Donald Trump campaign coalition co-chair were separately arrested and charged on Thursday by federal officials investigating the rancher’s notorious standoff in Nevada in 2014.

A federal grand jury last month indicted Cliven, 69, and his two sons Ammon, 40, and Ryan, 43, on a slew of felony offenses – including armed assault of law enforcement officials and conspiracy against the government – for the high-profile land-use dispute at the Bundy ranch in Bunkerville, Nevada.

Now a third Cliven Bundy son, Davey Bundy, 39, has also been arrested in what appeared to be a coordinated operation that also involved the arrest of Jerry DeLemus, a 61-year-old New Hampshire co-chair for Trump, the Republican presidential frontrunner.

Both now face prosecution for their participation in the conflict over government land restrictions two years ago.

The new round of arrests on Thursday indicates that federal prosecutors are expanding their case against the Bundy family and their rightwing supporters who have for years protested against the federal government’s regulations on public lands.

Indictment Accuses Bundy, Followers of Conspiracy in Nevada

By LYNNE TUOHY AND KEN RITTER, ASSOCIATED PRESS
LAS VEGAS — Mar 3, 2016, 5:28 PM ET

A federal indictment accuses renegade Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, two of his sons and at least five other men from several states of conspiracy, obstruction, assault, threatening federal officers and other charges in a 2014 armed standoff over grazing cattle on U.S. land near Bundy's ranch.

Bundy and seven other people's names appeared unredacted in an indictment obtained Thursday following the arrest of alleged co-conspirator Gerald "Jerry" DeLemus in New Hampshire.

They are Cliven Bundy's sons Ammon Bundy of Arizona and Ryan Bundy of Utah, and supporters Ryan Payne of Montana, Peter Santilli Jr. of California, and Brian Cavalier and Blaine Cooper, both of Arizona.

Each was already in custody after being identified by federal authorities as having taken part in the Nevada standoff and the occupation this year of a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon.

Federal authorities on Thursday arrested DeLemus, 61, of Rochester, New Hampshire, on allegations that he "organized and led armed patrols and security checkpoints" for several weeks after a tense armed confrontation in April 2014 near Cliven Bundy's melon farm and cattle ranch in Bunkerville, Nevada.

Fourteen more charged in armed 2014 standoff at Nevada ranch

BY JOSEPH AX AND DAN WHITCOMB

Fourteen more people have been charged in connection with a high-profile 2014 standoff over cattle grazing rights between armed protesters and federal agents at the Nevada ranch of Cliven Bundy, federal prosecutors said on Thursday.

One of the newly-charged defendants, New Hampshire resident and former U.S. Marine Jerry DeLemus, has headed a veterans' group formed by the presidential campaign of Republican Donald Trump.

DeLemus made headlines in January when he traveled to remote eastern Oregon to meet with protesters who occupied the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. DeLemus said at the time he was acting on his own and not as a representative of the Trump campaign.

A total of 19 people have now been indicted in the case, including Cliven Bundy and two of his sons. The defendants face charges including assault on a federal agent, threatening a law enforcement officer, conspiracy, firearms violations.

"This investigation began the day after the assault against federal law enforcement officers and continues to this day," Daniel Bogden, U.S. Attorney for Nevada, said in a written statement issued by his office.

Twelve new arrests over Cliven Bundy standoff include Trump campaigner

Five Bundy relatives and the New Hampshire campaign co-chair for Trump
face prosecution for roles in 2014 armed conflict over federal land restrictions

Sam Levin in San Francisco
Thursday 3 March 2016 23.15 GMT Last modified on Friday 4 March 2016 00.42 GMT

The FBI escalated its investigation into Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy’s 2014 standoff with the federal government Thursday with sweeping raids across the country that resulted in 12 arrests, including that of a Donald Trump campaign coalition co-chair in New Hampshire.

Two of Bundy’s sons were also among those arrested, amid signs that federal authorities are ramping up their efforts against the ultra-conservative, anti-government movement that also inspired the armed standoff in Oregon earlier this year.

Cliven Bundy had long refused to pay fees to the government to allow his cattle to graze on federally controlled public lands – a dispute that escalated to an armed standoff in 2014 when officials tried to seize his livestock. Hundreds of anti-government activists, some heavily armed, flocked to Bunkerville to support the Bundys, and the government ultimately backed down.

The latest arrests mean five members of the Bundy family, Cliven included, are in jail awaiting trial. If convicted, they could each face decades in prison.
