Social media’s 4-month-old Bernie Sanders lookalike has died

Source: WAPO

Bernie Baby, the cheerful infant who won the affections of people of all political stripes after his mom posted photos on social media of him greeting Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in a lookalike white-haired wig, oversized glasses and plaid tie, has died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Oliver Jack Carter Lomas-Davis of Los Angeles died Feb. 25, his aunt Anastasia Lomas told The Associated Press. He was 4 months old.

knowing which babies are more likely to fall victim to it. Babies that are high risk (premature, low birth weight) are often put on breathing monitors that have an alarm if the baby stops breathing. Perhaps all babies at the risk age of two to four months should be placed on these monitors. Having babies sleep on their backs does apparently help to lower the risk of SIDS, but that information is not necessarily well known.

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sudden-infant-death-syndrome/basics/causes/con-20020269

Physical factors associated with SIDS include:

Brain abnormalities. Some infants are born with problems that make them more likely to die of SIDS. In many of these babies, the portion of the brain that controls breathing and arousal from sleep doesn't work properly.

Low birth weight. Premature birth or being part of a multiple birth increases the likelihood that a baby's brain hasn't matured completely, so he or she has less control over such automatic processes as breathing and heart rate.

Respiratory infection. Many infants who died of SIDS had recently had a cold, which may contribute to breathing problems.
Sleep environmental factors

The items in a baby's crib and his or her sleeping position can combine with a baby's physical problems to increase the risk of SIDS. Examples include:

Sleeping on the stomach or side. Babies who are placed on their stomachs or sides to sleep may have more difficulty breathing than those placed on their backs.

Sleeping on a soft surface. Lying face down on a fluffy comforter or a waterbed can block an infant's airway. Draping a blanket over a baby's head also is risky.

Fast Facts (Page last updated: February 8, 2016)

Each year in the United States, there are about 3,500 Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID). These deaths occur among infants less than 1 year old and have no immediately obvious cause.

The three commonly reported types of SUID are

1. SIDS. About 1,500 infants died of SIDS in 2014.
2. Unknown cause.
3. Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed.

in his name to help pay for funeral expenses and possibly counseling for the family. His mother is absolutely devastated. Such a heartbreaking situation, but it restores my faith in humanity a little bit to see that so many people have pitched in to help out and are posting thoughtful and sincere notes of condolence.

Rest in Heaven, little Oliver. My your family be comforted that the whole world knew your name and saw you, and that hopefully you will have been in the arms of the next President of the United States.

All of DU should visit gofundme.com and donate. No one plans to pay for a funeral for a four month old, and most life insurance policies won't cover one so young.

Poor mother - may she, Oliver's father, and the family find peace.
