5 sheriff's deputies disciplined for actions at Trump rally
Updated 9:20 pm, Wednesday, March 16, 2016
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) A North Carolina sheriff has suspended five deputies for their actions at a Donald Trump rally in which a black man being escorted from the event was allegedly assaulted by a white man in attendance.
A statement from Cumberland County Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler on Wednesday said three deputies were demoted and suspended without pay for five days. Two other deputies were suspended for three days without pay, and all five were put on probation for 12 months.
Butler launched an investigation after a video showed a man with a cowboy hat hitting a black man being led from the arena by deputies March 9. Officials said the deputies had their eyes on the stairs when the man was hit.
Authorities charged a 78-year-old man with assault and disorderly conduct.

The job of law officers should be to defend the rights of individuals and to make peace. Enforcing the law comes under the category of making peace.

By Shawn Price | March 17, 2016 at 3:09 AM
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., March 17 (UPI) -- Five deputies have been disciplined in response to a Donald Trump supporter allegedly sucker punching a protestor at a rally in Fayetteville, N.C. last week.
The five were escorting the protestor out of the venue on March 9 when video captured the deputies neither protecting the protestor nor arresting the 78-year-old who allegedly threw the punch.
"The actions of the deputies and their failures to act in situations such as that which occurred during the Trump rally at the Crown Coliseum have never been and will not ever be tolerated under the policies of this office," Sheriff Earl Butler said in the statement.
Three of the deputies were suspended for five days without pay and demoted. The other two were suspended for three days without pay for "for unsatisfactory performance and the failure to discharge their duties," the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said.
