Donald Trump asks confused Pittsburgh crowd, ‘How’s Joe Paterno?’

Source: Fox

PITTSBURGH -- Donald Trump's question about Joe Paterno left people baffled.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Trump asked about Joe Paterno and said, "How's Joe Paterno? We gonna bring that back?"

Paterno died in 2012.

snip

Others pointed out that Trump mentioned Paterno, the former Penn State coach, in Pittsburgh: the home of the University of Pittsburgh.

"You know that virtually every report Freeh has produced in his post-FBI career has been criticized, if not totally refuted. I grew up on the outskirts of Happy Valley and the people that live in that region are rabid republicans, many who are buying into the shit that Trump is spewing.

Sure bringing up Paterno might not be the highlight of Trump's rally in Happy Valley. But if Trump can stick with his regular racist, sexist, homophobic speech he'll be a huge hit.

Of course we are talking about the regular population of people who live in Happy Valley and not the students that attend PSU.

Pushing seventy, I believe, and mid-eighties when he finally was fired (and died shortly thereafter). I'm not a Penn State grad, but was married to one through the Paterno idolatry era, and attended many games during those years. The reverence given the man for so many years seemed ridiculous for this on and off football fan, depending on the team or if I were dating a player ( I dated a Jr. H.S. coach once, in fact). Nonetheless, I felt the way "JoePa" was treated over this was a total tragedy. Overreaction at its worst, considering Paterno did much to earn respect compared to most other major college coaches. And Yeah, Trump's Pittsburgh speech was unbelievable considering the Pitt/Penn State rivalry for decades.

74. As usual, the image of an idolized coach or football program --
Sat Apr 16, 2016, 12:36 PM

-- is more important than the victims. The reaction of many of the Penn State fans was despicable. Just to give a single example: One of Sandusky's victims was outed against his wishes at the high school he was attending at the time. The grandmother of one of the Penn State football players walked up to the mother of the victim and said, "Now my grandson's team is going to lose, and it's all your son's fault!" The victim was a senior, but he had to drop out of school before he could graduate because he was being bullied relentlessly by classmates who blamed him for the firing of Paterno. (I guess Sandusky had nothing to do with it.) In the meantime, Franco Harris said he was going to bring a life-sized cardboard image of Paterno to the next Penn State game to protest Paterno's firing. Did it ever occur to him that he could have helped the bullied victim greatly by addressing the student body in an auditorium assembly to leave the bulled victim alone? I guess not.

Watch out, rape victims. When your perpetrator has been a player(s) or a coach, most of the time you won't get any justice. You're likely to be persecuted by some, if not many, of the fans -- namely, those who have created a rape culture for their sport.

I found that Penn State craziness is the strongest in between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. There use to be a huge UPitt/Penn State rivalry in football but when PSU went to the Big 10 that kinda died out a bit.

Although people in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia follow college sports (hey wasn't that a Philly team that just won the NCAA Men's Baskeball Tournament!), I've always found that the big cities are huge fan of their professional sports. Penn State is huge for all that space in between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. I grew up an hour outside of Penn State Main campus and those people were RABID for Penn State sports and especially Joe Paterno and his football team. I moved to the Philly Burbs and found that people were more rabid for Philly pro-sports teams.

1) Joe Paterno was a saint and he knew nothing about what Sandusky was really doing
2) The Freeh report is filled with half-truths and outright lies
3) ESPN led the liberal media in a witchhunt against JoePa
4) Mike McQueary is a shameful opportunist
5) The removal of Paterno's statue from Penn State was a travesty of the highest order.

Trump half listened to some explanation of this, and translated it to "How's Joe Paterno? We gonna bring that back?"
