Los Angeles bans worker travel to N. Carolina, Mississippi

Source: Mercury News

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says the city will stop doing business with North Carolina and Mississippi after the states approved legislation preventing anti-discrimination protections for gay, lesbian and transgender people.

He said Friday he will approve the City Council's resolution to ban workers from participating in any conventions or other business that requires city resources.

Garcetti said in a statement that he wants to keep the city's tax dollars "from supporting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity."

The North Carolina law directs transgender people to use public toilets corresponding to the sex listed on their birth certificate. It also excludes LGBT people from state anti-discrimination protections.

The only problem is they don't care. As we have seen with Kansas, Wisconsin and elsewhere these pinheads don't respond to financial or cultural, or practical reality, or the usually effective pressure of voter disapproval. In NC their funding and their direction is privately controlled through Art Pope and the Koch machine. McCrory only responded because as Governor he has a higher public profile this year since he's been blamed for the excesses of the Legislature as well as his own foul deeds. Since the gerrymandered legislative districts practically guarantee Republican dominance the only likely events that might bring real change would be a realllllly ugly political bribery scandal. That or intervention by the DOJ on Civil Rights grounds. Since the past and current DOJ has no interest in NC Civil Rights I doubt that will happen.

What would put a dent in this would be a bunch of communities passing protection ordinances in defiance of HB2 and then taking the state to court as a group. Anyone have some spare change to help with court costs?

The shaming of N. Carolina will begin to build & will eventually sustain itself. Until they are forced to reverse themselves.
