US to Provide More Troops, Attack Helicopters to Help Iraq Retake Mosul
Source: Voice Of America
BAGHDAD The U.S. is providing more than 200 additional U.S. troops and several Apache attack helicopters to assist Iraqi forces in their fight to retake Mosul from Islamic State, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced in Baghdad Monday.
Everyone knows the fight of Iraq is the fight for Mosul, a senior defense official said. Mosul is the end game in Iraq.
Iraqi forces began an offensive to retake the IS stronghold on March 24.
Carter traveled to Iraq Monday to talk with his commanders and Iraqi leaders about ways the U.S. can ramp up the fight against IS militants in Iraq and Syria.

(33,345 posts)would you characterize Obama's efforts to support the Iraqi Military as "Enthusiastic"?
I'd go more for "Desultory" - he's doing the least possible, and mainly to avoid the collapse of the Iraqi state, because the Pretzeldent left Obama holding the bag. I expect that Clinton will do the same.

(291 posts)In the US, there is basically one party - the business party. It has two factions, called Democrats and Republicans, which are somewhat different but carry out variations on the same policies. By and large, I am opposed to those policies. As is most of the population. Noam Chomsky
Really hoping Sen Sanders wins. Really hope there will be a true change this time. Who here really believes we can effect the outcome of a global war between the Sunnis and Shi'ites? Now we are fighting wars just to maintain the Petrodollar system. We certainly don't need Iraqi oil, which was never a vital national interest.

(22,913 posts)ISIS is fucking evil. Muslim forces are the ones doing 99% of the fighting. ISIS can't be allowed to just dig in and be there forever and this is an Arab mounted effort to defeat them. After what the U.S. did in Iraq to create the conditions for ISIS to emerge, an assist from us to defeat a mutual enemy, sadly, is warranted.
