30 dead, hundreds wounded as Taliban attack rattles Kabul

KABUL: At least 30 people were killed and hundreds wounded when a Taliban truck bomb tore through central Kabul and a fierce firefight broke out Tuesday, a week after the insurgents launched their annual spring offensive.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a densely crowded neighbourhood, which sent clouds of acrid smoke billowing into the sky and rattled windows several kilometres away.
The brazen assault near the defence ministry marks the first major Taliban attack in the Afghan capital since the insurgents announced the start of this year's fighting season.

(9,904 posts)certain other countries for days but in others such as there, it's a passing thought, barely a mention on the us media outlets, this world is much smaller than so many realize, why can't we rise above such baseless horrific actions, I just cannot comprehend such for want of a better word, evil.

(33,400 posts)they're the ones killing their fellow Afghanis.
unfortunately, you feel more empathy for places you've been, people who share your culture - i.e. Paris v. Kabul. it's human nature. we are tribal animals.
the Pashtun are tribal animals too. that's how they can rationalize this terror. they're attacking other Afghani ethnicities, or "apostates", or tools of America - but never "true muslims".

(9,904 posts)respect that particular individual but I have to admit depending on the specifics of the crime I would still favor an early demise, I believe jail to be a torture devise and find life sentences to be nothing more than a crime in itself against humanity,so it would have to be quick...
the horrors "we" as in world wide humans are capable of leaves me with no belief that our species are all that special....
Women can be true Muslims, sadly that does not protect many from being terrorized...it's not that simple, yes we tend to gravitate towards familiarity but that is no protection from becoming another statistic...

The Afghan government has revised the death toll after Tuesdays Taliban attack in Kabul to 64, in what appears to be the deadliest assault on the Afghan capital since 2001. An additional 347 were injured, many of them civilians.
Previous large-scale attacks, on a Shia mosque in 2011 and the Indian embassy in 2008, killed 54 and 58 people, respectively.
Officials initially said 30 people had died on Tuesday, but failed to account for what had happened inside the base targeted in the attack.
During morning rush hour, a suicide bomber struck an elite military unit that was training bodyguards for Afghan politicians and officials. According to a security source, at least 11 personnel were killed, including a nephew of the second vice-president, Sarwar Danish.
