NEW YORK (Reuters) - A male student was fatally shot early Monday morning at a fraternity house near the campus of New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey, authorities said.

Joseph Micalizzi, 23, of Freehold, New Jersey was shot at the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house shortly after 3 a.m. and confirmed dead at University Hospital in Newark two hours later, prosecutors said.

Officers from the Essex County Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and the Newark Police Department are investigating the case.

"At this time, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified," said Carolyn Murray, the acting Essex County prosecutor, in a statement.

"Friends said Micalizzi was walking home from a convenience store about a block away from the TKE house when the killer started following him.

When the victim walked inside, he was ambushed by one or more men who followed him inside and shot him.

“He was followed home from the E-Z Mart,” said Hendrick Nunez, 19, a Rutgers University student who knows the victim and lives in another frat house not far from the murder scene. He said many students frequent the store for late-night food runs.

“They came through the rear door with him and that’s how it happened.”"

And this is the last campus I would expect to see something like this happen.

I taught at this institution for quite a number of years. The students here are very, very smart. They are the least likely of any at the state's schools to shoot another person.

How sad for his family. Judging by his age, he was a senior and ready to graduate and embark upon his career.

No license required to purchase. It's an open carry state. Has a high number of concealed permits compared to neighboring states. No restrictions on carrying on college campuses.

WTF did the kid have that was worth killing him over? an iphone? $100? a calzone?

when they catch the killer, it's going to turn out that it was pointless. another testosterone-addled male ruining 2 lives: his victim's and his own.

Micalizzi was killed at the Tau Kappa Epsilon house on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Newark during a burglary, which took place at around 3:30 a.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office, said that Micalizzi was shot inside the house.
