Source: Dominion of New York
Police officers shot and killed an unarmed woman driving a stolen car in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn last night, sparking tension in the neighborhood, the Village Voice is reporting.
Their side of the story is that they shot the 23-year-old woman after she tried to drive backwards as two officers were entering the vehicle. The car she was driving had been reported stolen in a June 5 carjacking. Well provide more details as this story unfolds.
A graphic photo of the scene is circulating on Facebook.

The tragic count of these shootings keeps increasing.

(41,832 posts)It doesn't seem too biased, but here is a NYTimes article
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/15/nyregion/woman-shot-by-police-in-brooklyn-after-car-crash.html?ref=nyregion
The other article it is not clear if the discharge of the sidearm was intentional or not.
Just going on what was said.

(2,208 posts)...I don't see this as a clear cut case of "bad cops kill innocent person."
There are certainly plenty of those cases, but this isn't one of them.

(60,567 posts)Good grief.
BTW, the laws that define justifiable use of deadly force have NO REQUIREMENT for any kind of parity in armaments. Police shoot unarmed people EVERY DAY and are almost always found to have been justified in doing so.
Real life isn't some corny Kung Fu movie. When you find yourself in a FIGHT and you happen to have the upper hand because you have a sword and your opponent doesn't, you DON'T pause and throw the person a sword just to make it an honorable and "fair" fight.
I'm really tired of headlines blathering on about someone shooting an unarmed person. The things that justify use of deadly force all have to do with OVERT BEHAVIOR, which does not necessarily involve a weapon. Many people have been killed with bare hands.

She may not have had a gun but the car was being used as a weapon, as well as a getaway car.
I'm not a fan of the NYPD but I'm not seeing this as police brutality.

Why?
From the article in the O.P.:
Unable to escape through the passengers door, she got back into the drivers seat and attempted to back up. But by then another officer, Detective Phillip Atkins, was entering the drivers side. He was holding his gun, which discharged as she was hitting the gas. Police spokesman Paul Browne says its too early to tell whether Atkins meant to fire or it was an accident.
According to The New York Times:
The woman had an extensive criminal record, Mr. Browne said, with eight arrests. She had been out on bail, Mr. Browne said, and was scheduled to appear in court on Friday on charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, possession of a loaded weapon and burglary. On May 5, 2011, Mr. Browne said, the woman was arrested in a burglary, in which she and two others armed with a silver revolver forced their way into the Brooklyn home of a 29-year-old man, ordered him to tell them the location of money and shot him four times

Either that or she was attempting to injure or kill them.

(18,124 posts)if all allegations and rap sheets surrounding this person are true, she put herself in harms way. she only has herself to blame in this situation.. sounds like self defense on cops part. sad she was so young , what brought her to this point i wonder
jade3000
(238 posts)Yes, she clearly wasn't the greatest person in the world, but did any of her crimes warrant the death penalty she got. There's no evidence that the police were about to be seriously injured. She's driving a smashed up car in reverse. That should be a situation you can contain relatively quickly without killing anybody.

(60,567 posts)They're not at all the same thing.
If a police officer were to shoot someone and announce that he had punished the person, the officer would be charged with murder.
BTW, it's not clear yet that this particular shooting was intentional.

(60,567 posts)Self-defense, or an accidental shooting.
That's all the information I have right now.

I am one of the first to jump on the cops are too quick to shoot/tase/beat. But when you are driving 3-5,000 lbs of metal you are most definitely armed. How many people are killed each day by automobiles?

I have to say, I'm inclined to give the cops the benefit of the doubt on this one.

(1 post)This is really sad because both parties in some ways are innocent.
