Hezbollah commander Badreddine killed in Syria

Source: BBC

The man believed to be Hezbollah's most senior military commander in Syria's war has been killed in Damascus.

Mustafa Amine Badreddine died in a large explosion near Damascus airport, the Lebanon-based militant group said in a statement on its al-Manar website.

Hezbollah supports Syria's President Bashar al-Assad and has sent thousands of fighters into Syria.

In 2015, the US said that Badreddine was behind all Hezbollah's military operations in Syria since 2011.

Thousands of people have attended the funeral in Lebanon's capital, Beirut, of top Hezbollah military commander Mustafa Amine Badreddine.

Images from the funeral showed the coffin being carried among a mass of chanting supporters in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The BBC's Quentin Sommerville, in the capital, says some at the funeral blamed Israel for the killing, with one mourner saying: "Hezbollah has many spies."

Another said that without Badreddine, "Daesh [another name for so-called Islamic State] would be here".

An initial report by Lebanon's al-Mayadeen TV said that Badreddine, 55, had died in an Israeli air strike. But a later statement by Hezbollah on al-Manar's website did not mention Israel.

4. Terrorist responsible for many hundreds of deaths

Badreddine was suspected of being behind Hezbollah's bombing of the U.S. Marines in Beirut, the U.S. and French Embassies in Kuwait, the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri as well as numerous other attacks. Hezbollah is an illegal terrorist group that maintains its military outside the control of the Lebanese government, oppresses other ethnic groups in Lebanon, and has involved Lebanon in attacks on other countries without government consent. Good riddance.

Lebanon did not vote to enter the Syrian civil war. What right does Hezbollah (aka Iran) have to use the military which they should not have to get involved in another nation's wars? This has brought the war back into Lebanon. It matters not whether they support the murderous jihadis or the murderous Syrian government. They should not exist as a military organization and they should not terrorize the rest of Lebanon.

It's a tiny country that's always at risk from its larger rivals.

What right does any individual have to fight in another country's war? Unless there's specific legislation it's always going to happen. We had Byron fighting in the Greek War of Independence, Hemingway and Orwell fighting in the Spanish Civil War, and although Europeans have been banned from joining Jihadis in Syria the authorities look the other way when volunteers go to join the Peshmurga.
