LINCOLN The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation will remain officially dry after a vote to allow alcohol sales was called off at the last minute.
Residents of the reservation, located just across the Nebraska border, were poised to vote Tuesday. But the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council, in the face of protesters on horseback, voted 9-4 late Monday afternoon to halt the election.
A lot of people dont want it, said Percy White Plume, who staged the protest ride. If you allow liquor sales, all the young people will say, it must be OK. Well have even more alcohol-related deaths, beatings and rapes that go along with it.
And the revenue isnt going to be that much, White Plume added.

GOP control of most major Cities prior to Probation was undone by Prohibition. The GOP controlled most major cities through their control of the saloons in those cities. You went to a Saloon, you were exposed to GOP talking points. With Prohibition, those saloons were closed (or reverted to Speakeasies, where most voters avoided) and most urban areas switched from being GOP stronghold to Democratic Strongholds. That most major Cities were GOP strongholds prior to the 1920s was the main reason the Democratic Party supported Prohibition prior to the 1920s. The Democratic party new the only way to make headroom in any of those cities was to close down the GOP controlled Saloons. Prior to the 1920s, the Democratic Party was more Rural Base then Urban Based, but the 1920 census was the first US Census that showed more Americans living in Urban Areas then Rural Areas (Please note the US Census bureau uses what they called "Urban Clusters" of 2000 or more people as an "Urban Area" thus you can have counties with nothing but farmland but the workers on those farms live in such Urban Clusters so that county is an "Urban County" as far as the US Census bureau is concerned, you see this extensively in California).
IN addition during Prohibition, Spousal abuse and child abuses cases dropped, divorce rates held steady (divorce rates tend to go up doing "boom" periods for people have money to afford to divorce each other, thus the fact the divorce rates held steady is attributed to less marital stress caused by making alcohol illegal). Overall crime rates dropped (Through prohibition related crime increased). Murder rates of people who knew each other dropped (This is attributed to less people getting drunk and killing each other), while rates involving people who did NOT know each other increased (the later are almost impossible to solve and tied in this Prohibition). Overall the murder rates declined in the 1920s and stayed low outside the American South (The American South has always had a much higher murder rate then the rest of the country going back to colonial times, in fact every major city in the US had lower then average murder rates before the 1960s, do to the fact the South's Murder rate was so high)
Bar room fights disappeared and were NOT replaced by fights in speakeasies (except in those locations where such speakeasies operated openly). Hospitalization for DTs and other alcohol related problems declined.
Yes, the were wars among criminals when it came to beer, but very little over Whiskey (Al Capone's Empire was built on beer not whiskey). Most of the criminal activity was protected by the GOP controlled government of most cities of that time period (Chicago's mayor at the time of Al Capone was a Republican, and the GOP's efforts to tie Al Capone to the Democratic Party kept running into a road block, all the bribes had gone to the GOP).
Sorry, Prohibition had done a lot of good, it would have lasted had the Government just legalized Beer and Wine (That is what the fights were over NOT hard Liquor). Prohibition was working, it was doing what its authors wanted it to do. The problem was do to the completeness of prohibition you left the criminal element take control of it, and take over meant that such beer suppliers could NOT go to the court to settle their disputes, and instead had to settle such disputes through violence. The papers made a big deal of the Violence and that publicity (and the need for additional tax revenue) lead to the repeal of prohibition. Overall, most people who looked at the statistics (including family abuse and divorce rates) give Prohibition a plus, while acknowledging the problem involving Beer (And much like today's war of drugs, legalized Marijuana, you take out the main source of profit for drug dealers, hard Drugs are much more profitable then Marijuana, but it is Marijuana sales that is the steady income for such dealers, you take away the Marijuana, most drug dealers would go bankrupt do to a lack of customers, in most cases there are NOT enough Hard Drug users to pay the cost of keeping open a drug business. On the other hand Marijuana is a steady income that will pay for the drug selling location seven days a week, hard drugs is just additional profit, but not a profit you can count in to stay in business day after day).

So no, surrounding them with liquor stores, much less putting them right next door, is criminal. Like putting a diabetic in a room full of twinkies.
