Sanders campaign down to less than $6 million in cash

Source: abc/ap

WASHINGTON (AP) Bernie Sanders' campaign had less than $6 million at the start of May, a critical cash shortage as he makes an admittedly tough final play to wrest the Democratic presidential nomination from Hillary Clinton.

Sanders' rival had five times as much money, according to new Federal Election Commission filings, beginning the month with $30 million in the bank.

The two were on roughly equal fundraising footing last month, with Clinton and Sanders each raising more than $25 million. But the Vermont senator spent almost $39 million to Clinton's $24 million, the reports showed.

This year, Sanders has averaged more than $40 million in spending per month, underlining how quickly he could blow through the cash he had on hand at the beginning of May.

His point isn't that you shouldn't spend money on political campaigns, it is that the system is broken in the extent to which you must rely on large donors who have interests possibly adverse to your best judgement. The inevitable conflict is mitigated by relying on small donors, as he has.

on "the Bernie phenomenon," so I imagine he is a true believer in the power of money.

Hillary's current $30 million strikes me as not much to take on the massively wealthy forces who are already fighting tooth and nail to defeat the Democratic candidate. Her donations continue as Bernie's decline, of course, because most people believe that is where their money needs to go now.

Speaking of, better up our auto-donation. Last fall she had plenty and we directed some of it elsewhere.

OOPS!

By Rebecca Savransky May 02, 2016, 12:31 pm

Less than 1 percent of the $61 million brought in by Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton's fundraising vehicle with state parties has stayed with the state parties, according to Politico's analysis of the latest Federal Election Commission filings.

The Hillary Victory Fund includes Clinton's presidential campaign, the Democratic National Committee and 32 state party committees. The fund lets Clinton receive checks of $350,000 or more from her supporters.

When Clinton launched the fundraising vehicle last summer, she said "when our state parties are strong, we win" and that she would "rebuild our party from the ground up."

The fund has transferred $3.8 million to the state parties, according to Politico, but $3.3 million of that cash was then transferred to the DNC. The fund has transferred $15.4 million to Clinton's campaign and $5.7 million to the DNC.

Hillary Clinton withholding donations from state parties, report says
Politico reports that less than 1 percent of the $61 million raised so far has gone to state parties

"According to Politico, state party committees have received $3.8 million from the victory fund, but $3.3 million (88 percent) was soon after transferred to the DNC. Conveniently, Elizabeth Jones, who is the COO of the Clinton campaign, is also the committee’s treasurer and decides how the funds are allocated."
By contrast, the victory fund has transferred $15.4 million to Clinton’s campaign and $5.7 million to the DNC, which will work closely with Clinton’s campaign if and when she becomes the party’s nominee,” reported Politico. “Most of the $23.3 million spent directly by the victory fund has gone towards expenses that appear to have directly benefited Clinton’s campaign, including $2.8 million for “salary and overhead” and $8.6 million for web advertising that mostly looks indistinguishable from Clinton campaign ads and that has helped Clinton build a network of small donors who will be critical in a general election expected to cost each side well in excess of $1 billion.”
"In essence, individuals are able to donate to the Clinton campaign via sideroads such as the Victory Fund, with sums 130 times greater than the $2,700 limit."

Millions of dollars have been raised by Clinton for the DNC and/or the State Parties, and a big portion of that raised for the DNC has gone to the State Parties.

You do know that Bernie has a Victory Fund? Hillary's Victory Fund is modeled after the highly successful Obama Victory Fund. The FEC is totally cool with it. This election promises to be very pricey. I'm guessing that the totals will easily go over $3,000,000,000.00 And spare me the 'keep money out of Politics' crap. You don't bring a cup of cold water to a gun fight.

3,000,000,000.00!

It's astounding to me how the political process eats up so much money. Do you know how much good most people could do with $3,000,000,000?

It reminds me of an old lyric.

"10 million dollars on a losing campaign,
20 million starving and writhing in pain"

And it's worse now. Hundreds of millions of dollars wasted.

Anyway, I'd recommend giving it a listen, or at least reading the lyrics. http://genius.com/Bad-religion-punk-rock-song-lyrics

My apologies for not touching on the majority of your post, but money in politics is a HUGE problem and turning a blind eye does nothing except perhaps ease our conscience. When have-nots are trying to fund a campaign against billionaires? That's part of the reason this country is going to shit. It's a legit class war playing out in front of our eyes. Big-time power players fund candidates at all levels (a la the Koch brothers) in hopes that any money they spend on elections will return to them through legislation that typically hurts those with less money (I.E. union workers). Meanwhile, most people only become politically active during presidential cycles. Those have-nots cede ground every year to those with mountains of money to throw around.

This is an untenable situation.

The money being spent is totally obscene.

Yes, uber-rich people like the Koch's will often hedge their investment. But I think there is something else going on here. IMHO.

I like Bad Religion, but I rarely listen to lyrics (of any group). To me the Voice is just another instrument.

Hillary Clinton owes Iowa police THOUSANDS of dollars in unpaid bills for providing security

Despite raising more than $130 million for her presidential campaign, the former Secretary of State has yet to pay Des Moines police $1,800 for manning the concert on October 24, the force claims.

Meanwhile police in Marshalltown say she owes them $2,700 for working overtime to protect her and her husband Bill Clinton at two January rallies. Marshalltown police chief says he wrote to her on Feb 3 but got no reply.

He says Bernie Sanders was the only candidate to pay them upfront

He's not going to be able to pay his bills, either. Why do you think he's quietly negotiating with the DNC?

Suppose the organization that he publicly accused of money laundering will help him retire his debt? Probably.

The Des Moines article you linked says that the Sanders campaign hadn't paid yet, either:

"So the chief has issued a $259 bill to Sanders (for Jan. 27) and will send another to the Clinton campaign for Bill’s stop that same day ($656.75) and the former secretary of state’s big sum in December.

But he doesn’t expect to be paid."

If you have proof that Sanders paid all of his bills and Clinton didn't, let's see it.

And I don't see much prospect of an upset for someone whose campaign is visibly running on fumes, barring some drastic unforeseen event.

I was not impressed with HRC's financial mismanagement in 2008 either. As the underdog Bernie knew what he was dealing with and had Obama's model of a successful grassroots campaign to work with. Yet I'm supposed to believe he'd do a better job once in power, because he was once mayor of Burlington VT (a town of 42000 people) and so has executive experience.

She learned that lesson the last time around--she overspent and got in a bit of a fix last time out.

The money tells the tale--if it's not coming in, he's going to have a tough time of it.

He always outspent her, and damn near drained the account each month, relying on the faithful to send in the money to refill the coffers.

I'll bet Tad makes sure he gets paid. If the campaign had half the money back that Tad blew in states that the pollsters said were hopeless in the first place, they'd have enough to get through to California without quite so much stress.

Still, though, I am shocked that the needle is so close to E. I don't think he's ever been this broke throughout the entire process.

66. Bill Clinton Didn't wrap up the nomination until June 1992 in CA
Fri May 20, 2016, 09:40 PM
May 2016

Hillary got a lot of flack talking about the Kennedy assassination in 08 as she pushed on to lose. Bernie is right to stay in too. IF he has no chance, there are a lot of people that seem to want him to drop out when it doesn't matter. Smell of fear?

NYT: Clinton Remark on Kennedy’s Killing Stirs Uproar: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/24/us/politics/24clinton.html?_r=0

By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE MAY 24, 2008

BRANDON, S.D. — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton defended staying in the Democratic nominating contest on Friday by pointing out that her husband had not wrapped up the nomination until June 1992, adding, “We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.”

Her remarks were met with quick criticism from the campaign of Senator Barack Obama, and within hours of making them Mrs. Clinton expressed regret, saying, “The Kennedys have been much on my mind the last days because of Senator Kennedy,” referring to the recent diagnosis of Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s brain tumor. She added, “And I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive.”

Still, the comments touched on one of the most sensitive aspects of the current presidential campaign — concern for Mr. Obama’s safety. And they come as Democrats have been talking increasingly of an Obama/Clinton ticket, with friends of the Clintons saying that Bill Clinton is musing about the possibility that the vice presidency might be his wife’s best path to the presidency if she loses the nomination.

It was in the context of discussions about her political future that Mrs. Clinton made the remarks on Friday to the editorial board of The Sioux Falls Argus Leader. She had said that some people whom she did not name were trying to push her out of the race, but she noted that historically many races had gone on longer than hers.

Without that he didn't get the nomination.

Hillary advisers said they would appeal to the DNC's Rules & Bylaws Committee . Where have I heard the term wine & cheese?

On May 31, the rules committee accepted the Michigan state party's 69-59 distribution of pledged delegates and restored half votes to Florida's and Michigan's delegations.

Hillary in 08 lost before the last two states voted June 3 on super-delegates.

IF Bernie gets close, superdelegates in states he won can switch or avoid controversy and stay home entirely. NEW math.

Meanwhile you got Trump's pod people spiking the Dem primaries by voting for Sanders (like WV), and Sanders is happy to milk it for all it's worth.

Bill & Hillary Clinton may get some free air time, but it's nowhere NEAR what Trump has gotten and continues to receive.

And this article was written in March, so I KNOW it's gone way over he $2 Billion dollar mark by now because he is now running in the GOP primary basically uncontested.

Donald Trump Has Received Nearly $2 Billion In Free Media Attention

03/15/2016 05:41 pm ET
Donald Trump received nearly $2 billion in free media exposure this past year, dwarfing his Republican rivals and more than doubling the attention paid to Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, according to tracking firm mediaQuant.

Trump received $1.9 billion in free, or “earned,” media coverage, yet spent just $10 million on paid advertisements this election cycle. While Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Ohio Gov. John Kasich each spent more money than Trump on ads, the Republican candidates clocked in at $313 million, $204 million and $38 million in free media respectively.

The New York Times first reported Tuesday on Trump’s “mammoth advantage in free media” using data provided by mediaQuant. In an interview with The Huffington Post, mediaQuant Chief Analytics Officer Paul Senatori discussed the firm’s 2016 findings and comparisons between the candidates and major national and world figures.

Here’s how it works: The Portland-based mediaQuant tracks mentions in over 20,000 English-language outlets for many boldface names, ranging from Pope Francis to Taylor Swift to everyone who ran (or considered running) for president in 2016. The company generates a current media rating for each person based on the quantity and quality of that exposure, ranging from 0 to 100.

In computing the value of earned media, mediaQuant runs the number of raw mentions through an algorithm assessing the tone of the coverage — whether positive, negative or neutral — and considers the media outlet’s reach and its advertising rates.

I've seen Bernie Sanders giving a thank you speech to supporters, and the cable new network I was watching have cut away to cover an empty podium where the media was 'awaiting' Trump's victory speech. The camera was trained on the podium with NO trump for about 15 minutes (I didn't stay there for 15 minutes--went back and fourth to other programming). Sanders was speaking live and as soon as it was thought Trump would speak, the news media went 'bonkers' in covering him. No picture within a picture. Trump's empty podium only

I have to admit, the past several years I tend to stay away from cable news networks and yes even most local television programming--searching for alternative news sources on line in which to gather news/political/lifestyle information.

Fri May 20, 2016, 10:19 PM

Whereas for Hill:

19% of campaign donations came from donations of $200 or less

Bernie Sanders Campaign Finance (as of March 2016)

$182.2M
99.98% Campaign donations
0.02% Super PACs and other groups

Hillary Clinton Campaign Finance (as of April 2016)

$256.2M
70% Campaign donations
30% Super PACs and other groups

Easy for his rival to have so much money in the bank when you have a limitless source of big donor SuperPac money at the ready. Infinitely more impressed (and proud) of how Sanders has raised his funds. To reiterate those small dollar donations: 65% vs. 19%!

148. Selling Bernie shirts and giving half the profits to him
Fri May 20, 2016, 11:03 PM
May 2016

Hey guys! If you have time please hear me out.

So I'm a broke college grad graphic designer (and unpaid intern at a non-profit) and I'm unable to scrounge up cash to donate to Bernie. I've been helping in other ways like making brochures so campaigners can pass them out. I made these cool shirts and wanted to send half the profit to Bernie because he's my inspiration and he's bloody fabulous. They cost a lot to make so the profit is very small but if a few bucks helps him then I say what the hell. And it helps me pay rent! <3

I'm selling them here --> https://teespring.com/feel-the-bern-flaming-shirts
It would be really cool to see people wear it at the DNC and rallies. Or in general.

And you can use my brochures too! You can download them here for free. They're for the Californian primary (I live in LA) so keep that in mind if you live somewhere else and want to pass them out. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ct7okwmkm2fsn0v/bernie%20sanders%20brochure_COLOR.pdf?dl=0

I also have a Make America Hang Again trump sticker in the works if you like dark evil stuff. Haha.

Thanks for listening!
