Alan Young, star of 1960s sitcom 'Mr. Ed,' dies at 96

Source: AP

Actor-comedian Alan Young, who played the amiable straight man to a talking horse in the 1960s sitcom "Mister Ed," has died, a spokeswoman for the Motion Picture and Television Home said Friday. He was 96.

The English-born, Canadian-educated Young died Thursday, according to Jaime Larkin, spokeswoman for the retirement community where Young had lived for four years. His children were with him when he died peacefully of natural causes, she said.

Young was already a well-known radio and TV comedian, having starred in his own Emmy-winning variety show, when "Mister Ed" was being readied at comedian George Burns' production company. Burns is said to have told his staff: "Get Alan Young. He looks like the kind of guy a horse would talk to."

Mr. Ed was a golden Palomino who spoke only to his owner, Wilbur Post, played by Young. Fans enjoyed the horse's deep, droll voice ("WIL-bur-r-r-r-r&quot and the goofy theme song lyrics ("A horse is a horse, of course, of course ... &quot . Cowboy star Allan "Rocky" Lane supplied Mr. Ed's voice.

Wonderful man. We covered everything with him and he was an open book. I got a special hug for mentioning the wonderful childhood memories of "Mister Ed."

"Mister Ed"?
This fell right into your hands, didn't it?

Do you have an urge to rub peanut butter on his lips to get his last words at the funeral?

Mister Ed just last night. Loved the one when Ed was out at Dodgers Stadium playing baseball.

God Speed, and RIP Mr. Young.

You will be missed, and even in your passing you're still bringing me untold hours of entertainment and bringing me fond and wonderful memories....

Full Version:

A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course
That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mr. Ed.

Go right to the source and ask the horse
He'll give you the answer that you'll endorse.
He's always on a steady course.
Talk to Mr. Ed.

People yakkity yak a streak and waste your time of day
But Mister Ed will never speak unless he has something to say.

A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And this one'll talk 'til his voice is hoarse.
You never heard of a talking horse?

Well listen to this.

I am Mister Ed.

I just loved this show growing up. I never missed it and still watch the reruns when I can catch them. During those years, animals were tops, and I was always horse-crazy. I'm still horse-crazy.
