Vermont transgender man dies after attack

Source: CNN

(CNN)A Vermont transgender man died on Sunday from injuries suffered in a beating that's being investigated as a possible bias incident, Burlington Police said.

Amos Beede, 38, was described by police as transient. He was attacked in a homeless encampment near Pine Street Barge Canal in Burlington, which is where police found him the morning of May 22. He suffered multiple blunt force injuries to his face and head, causing internal bleeding, and numerous broken ribs, police said in a news release the day of the assault.

He was brought to the University of Vermont Medical Center for treatment; initially, his recovery prospects seemed favorable. His condition deteriorated over the week until police announced on Sunday he had succumbed to his injuries.

Beede was a transgender man, Chief of Police Brandon del Pozo noted in a news release on Sunday. Though the investigation suggested motives "independent of this fact," the department "has not ruled out the victim's transgender status as a possible additional motive," del Pozo said.

Maybe Caitlyn Jenner could step forward and pay the funeral bills? Yeah, right. He is the only transgender who does not have to fear that someone will beat him up. Money makes a very good protective blanket.

9. Why do you have a problem with what the Police Chief said?

It does seem prudent to do the investigation before jumping to charging that it was a hate crime. What is important is that he said that one factor they are investing is where it was a bias incident. Unless you know more than the facts that are in the public domain, why would you not want the police to follow good practices in making a solid case against whomever was involved in this?

If it was because a bias crime, it is important that that case is clearly made against those responsible AND that they prove the cause was due to his sexual identity.

Homeless people face all sorts of risk from being beaten to death, simply by virtue of being homeless. So it's possible his death may not have anything directly to do with being transgender, and we may never know exactly what the motivations were of those who beat him. However, simply being transgender puts one at far higher risk of being homeless because they are often shunned by family members and are unemployable because of the discrimination they face.

So it's pretty likely hate killed Amos Beede one way or another.
