STANFORD, Calif. --
A Palo Alto judge is now receiving death threats as rage grows over the six-month sentence he gave a former Stanford swimmer convicted of sexual assault. As a result, security has been beefed up at the courthouse.
"He has received threats and his family has received threats," said Santa Clara County Public Defender Gary Goodman.
As a veteran public defender, Goodman is in Judge Aaron Persky's courtroom almost daily.
Persky is the judge who gave former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner a six-month sentence for sexual assault. A recall campaign is underway.
"He's a kind man, he's a well measured man, he's an excellent jurist,' said Goodman. "He follows the rules. He follows the statutes. He follows the process. The process worked here."

(66,369 posts)No one with a brain thinks the victim brought it on herself. But the judge does. So, he should be careful where he passes out...

(4,246 posts)I wish people would articulate their disgust in any way other than threatening violence.
I didn't realize this horrible judge had a family... Wonder if he thought about them before letting a violent rapist free. What if brock hadn't been stopped? What if what if what if. What if it was his wife that had been raped.
Funny he didn't take into account the violence inflicted upon the victim but is so "threatened" by violent words. Just another entitled asshole that one is.
farleftlib
(2,125 posts)but the judge was shockingly lenient with this jock-off. The victim feels like she's been raped
all over again no doubt. I hope he gets thrown off the bench or whatever consequences are
appropriate here. The guy was acting like a sexual predator not just that night but even a
week before. He still feels like he's the victim here.
Let's hope Karma takes care of both misogynists.

(38,427 posts)"If he gets thrown off the bench or whatever consequences appropriate here" Is also logical..but threatening to kill the judge??
I don't believe that is an answer.

(6,399 posts)The problem is that what he did was allowed within the laws and sentencing that's established.
The focus should be less on the messenger, the judge, and on the laws and fixing them to something that's more appropriate for the crime committed.
farleftlib
(2,125 posts)However, there were no mitigating factors but a couple of aggravating ones. This guy had
been manhandling women all that night and at other parties. He obviously felt entitled by his
jock status to just take whatever he wanted and the judge reinforced that disgusting and
misogynistic attitude with the light sentence.

(47,552 posts)I don't know if that's signatures from registered voters statewide or if they have to be from people in his district.
I do know I'd sign and I'd also kick in a few bucks. Totally worth it.

(1,178 posts)though I live in the next county. From what I am hearing, they would get 70k signatures in a day once the word got out and 100k would not at all be a problem.

(1,178 posts)No one filed to oppose him, so his name was not on the primary ballot on Tuesday. In November, he will be automatically re-elected. I don't know whether it is possible to write in a candidate.
There were Facebook posts saying this guy was up for reelection. Sounded like he had an opponent.
Well, maybe a write in or maybe a recall.

I'd ask this guy 2 questions: Would a young black male at a club receive a 6 month sentence for sexual assault on an unconscious victim? If not, then the system didn't work.
And, 2, if this happened to your daughter, or someone else that you loved, and the perp got a 6 month sentence, would you be ok with that? If not, then, no idiot, obviously the process didn't work.
Sorry the judge is getting death threats. Absolutely breaks my heart. But no one making the threat should go to jail for that 2 minutes of verbal action.

Not saying it's right, it just is.

(62,444 posts)Headlines of the form:
" Person Named In News Item) Receives Death Threats" is sort of like "Sun Expected To Rise In Morning".
And the story of this form is inevitably used as an example of "see how nasty people who believe X are".
I'm pretty convinced that people just send emails and crap at principals in news stories of note, for no actual purpose other than feeding the internet outrage machinery itself.

(20,219 posts)WTF????????? You're a public defender, you're invested in perpetrators getting off lightly.
FUCK YOU!!!! The process did NOT work---A woman's life was devalued, mocked, ravaged out of "concern" for a rapist's future success....because misogyny ruled this process.

(20,219 posts)so sick of sexism, and the way it's some goddamned joke. Rape is about concern for not victimizing the rapists.
Just posted an excellent article from rawstory in Good Reads....Sad to see all the voyeuristic TandA ads below the article, though.
I'm in a very very bad mood.
