Sweden on alert, explosives found near nuke plant

STOCKHOLM (AP) -- Sweden raised the security alert for the country's three nuclear power plants Thursday after explosives were found on a truck at the southwestern Ringhals atomic power station. Police said they were investigating possible sabotage.
Bomb sniffer dogs detected the explosives during a routine check Wednesday afternoon by security staff while the truck was in the power plant's industrial area near its high security enclosure. Police declined to describe the amount or type of explosive material found.
Bomb technicians said the material lacked a detonating device, meaning there was no danger of an explosion.
Police spokesman Tommy Nyman said officers were investigating possible sabotage but had no suspects. He said the driver of the truck had been unaware of the explosives placed in the vehicle and was not suspected of being involved.

(3,682 posts)I would hate to see them struggling with a nuclear catastrophe, intentional or otherwise. I'm glad that this did not become a risk (and according to authorities it would not have), but it still highlights the vulnerability inherent in nuclear power. At the end of the day, as much as I respect and admire human ingenuity, I respect the unpredictability and scale of natural and human-generated events much more. I just don't trust the human ability to engineer to the point of zero risk of failure...and the consequences of failure are just much too high with nuclear power.
