Deb Fischer calls for cutting Justice Department funding unless it issues plan on state-level pot ..

WASHINGTON Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., wants to cut money to the Department of Justice unless it issues a plan for monitoring the effects of state-level pot legalization.
Marijuana is being transported across state lines and making its way out of states such as Colorado and into Nebraskas communities, Fischer said in a press release. This drug remains an illegal substance on the federal level and in Nebraska, where our law enforcement officers are working hard to stop the crime and violence associated with its transport.
Fischer has offered an amendment to pending legislation that would cut the funding for the Office of the Deputy Attorney General unless the department issues its plan.
Colorados decision to legalize and regulate recreational marijuana has sparked outcries from neighboring states, including Nebraska, that say they are being harmed.

(8,175 posts)Amazing what the state does to prevent marijuana, yet it is basically endorsing illegal sales of alcohol to Native Americans from the Pine Ridge.
And they complain about violence coming into Nebraska via Colorado's legal sales of marijuana.
Hey, Nebraska, let the Pine Ridge grow pot and maybe you would have less violence. Or not...I understand someone is making a ton of money off the sale of liquor...wink wink.

(962 posts)"The news is replete with deaths caused by marijuana intoxication in Colorado. Edibles mainly."
Seems to me that no citizens deserve access to legal cannabis more than Nebraskans.

(1,142 posts)There have been 3-4 deaths related to edibles, but the relationship is not direct, 3 of the deaths were self inflicted.
One was the man who shot his wife, after eating some THC candy, which he's claiming caused him to become temporarily insane, which is still questionable because they had a history of marital problems and the wife had previously stated she feared her husband, and the police reported his THC levels were relatively low, so I am not sure how this is equated to the news being replete with deaths due to marijuana.

Still over a period of years, a relatively low number if you compared the number of deaths from alcohol, tobacco, opiates, other pharmaceutical drugs like anti-depression related drugs, and then looked at the reduction of opiate related deaths etc... And also consider that there could be other factors related to these, which include, drug interaction with other drugs, persons who may have mental imbalances or pre-existing mental illness, if alcohol was also involved and so on

(6,241 posts)That's the emergency.
Meanwhile, story came out yesterday about the 48 people that were shot during the 15 hour filibuster about gun crime. Twelve people in that group died. But they don't want to do anything about that.

So it's not the weed that's killing people, it's stupid people on weed who are killing themselves and others. And guess what? We give those same stupid people guns, cars, unlimited alcohol, cell phones and opiates, with which they kill one another at a rate many thousand times higher than marijuana.
From that point of view it's easier to argue that marijuana is saving lives by preventing people from pursuing those other stupid pursuits.
And I just have to add that it's utter scummery for Nebraska, of all states, who happily protects its right to cross-border sales of alcohol to South Dakotan Indians, to be upset about this. Shame on them.
The particular murder in Denver doesn't make a persuasive case for being impaired by cannabis, especially since he was able to recall the digital code required to open his gun safe. 3 or 4 deaths due to edibles? When one single death can be positively attributed solely to the influence of cannabis, it will be big news, indeed.

(581 posts)need more money. But they support the lobbyists that fund them. Like the NRA. GOP takes millions from the NRA. Its blood money to the GOP, not caring about human life, but bankrolling their pockets. Not one Republicans got on the Senate floor the other night and told a story about anyone that has suffered or experienced a mass murder, not one Republicans. They are so distanced from actual human life. There only wants votes to be elected, then turn to the Lobbyist who shoves big money to them for there votes.
America is actually fed up with the GOP, the November election will reflect the inaction of the Republicans.

This is why Republicans need to go back to grade school for a little education on simple logic. You want to fight crime, you don't defund the cops.

(5,790 posts)** Important: I'm explaining what the state thinks in a nutshell-- not agreeing with it **
The state's viewpoint is a) pot is illegal here, b) we want to keep it that way and c) we are spending a lot of time and money policing the border with Colorado for smuggling. When states debated lowering their legal drinking age from 21 -- and the Constitution gives states the right to regulate booze -- the feds said "do it and we'll take your highway funds." Now the state of Colorado has legalized marijuana in contravention of federal statutes, and the feds aren't lifting a finger to sanction Colorado. That seems hypocritical to the State of Nebraska.
