Democrats are staging a sit-in on the House floor to push for action on gun control legislation.

More than two dozen Democrats were participating in the sit-in shortly before noon, with some lawmakers seated cross-legged on the floor. Democrats have been pressing for action on gun control before the House leaves at the end of this week for a planned recess.

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), the veteran lawmaker who was brutally beaten by police in the civil rights march on Selma, Ala., began the sit-in with a speech on the floor where he was surrounded by dozens of his colleagues.

"We have turned deaf ears to the blood of the innocent and the deaths in our nation," he said. "Mr, Speaker, where is the heart of this body. Where is our soul?

UPDATE

House Republicans just turned the cameras off so you can’t see an anti-gun violence sit-in

Republicans shut down cameras inside the U.S. House of Representatives to prevent Americans from seeing a sit-in by the Democratic colleagues to force a vote on gun control.

Congressional Democrats led by Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), a civil rights veteran, took to the floor to shame their GOP colleagues into voting for new gun laws. Lewis and about 40 Democrats sat down, and Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) led a prayer on the House floor.

They briefly stood up for the Pledge of Allegiance but sat back down, chanting, “no bill, no break.”

Then Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) called a recess, saying the House was not in a state of order, and the cameras were shut off.

Former House Speaker Denny Hastert (R) goes to jail today for perving high school kids; former Republican House Speaker Newtie (3 wives philanderer) Gingrich is all the rage on talk shows today as possible Republican VP nominee and "moral champion"; and today we find that Paulie Ryan - the current Republican Stooge-in-Charge - has done nothing to date for America. Nothing. Not a firkin thing. Wasting our time and money. Not doing their jobs.

Now by refusing Congress's fundamental responsibility to debate and to vote on the public record on important and timely legislation, he and his Republican cronies have betrayed America once again, and today sparked a Legislative ClusterWank of epic proportions.
