Activist in Mexico disappeared search killed, wife wounded
Jun 23, 6:58 PM EDT
MEXICO CITY (AP) -- An activist group in Mexico says a member of a civilian search group looking for disappeared relatives has been killed by gunmen and his wife severely wounded.
The National Search Brigade for Disappeared Persons says Jose Jesus Jimenez Gaona was slain in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz. The state prosecutor's office said Thursday that three gunmen pulled up to the victims' vehicle and opened fire with high-powered weapons.
The couple's daughter Jenny disappeared in 2011 in the Veracruz city of Poza Rica.
Rival cartels are engaged in turf battles, kidnappings and disappearances in Veracruz. As in other parts of Mexico, inadequate police investigation in the state has led relatives to start search groups that in some cases have uncovered clandestine burial grounds.

Father Murdered Looking for Missing Daughter in Mexico

The murder is suspected to be motivated by the father's work with the National Search Brigade for Disappeared People.
Jose Jesus Jimenez Gaona, member of the National Search Brigade for Disappeared People, died Wednesday after being shot in Veracruz, Mexico, local media reported.
Mario Vergara Hernandez, a fellow member of the brigade, told news outlet Animal Politico that the murder took place while Gaona was driving with his wife Francisca. He was shot three times and died instantaneously. His wife was taken to intensive care.
According to Hernandez, Jimenez Gaona joined the brigade last month to look for his daughter, Jenny Isabel Jimenez, who disappeared in May 2011. Hernandez believes Jimenez Gaona was targeted for working with the National Search Brigade, an organization that searches for mass graves in Mexicos southern state.

The murder of Jimenez Gaona has been condemned by Mexican human rights groups and the brigade as yet another example of widespread impunity and the escalating violence in Mexico. In a statement, the groups demand the attorney general of Veracruz launch an immediate, thorough and impartial investigation into the attack on Jimenez Gaona and intensify the search for whereabouts of Jenny Isabel Jimenez Vazquez, whose father can search for her no longer.
