New Yorkers Protest Deadly Police Shootings

Source: NBC NEWS

A pair of fatal police shootings of black men this week has touched off a firestorm of anguish and anger across the country, including in New York City, where protesters were set to demonstrate Thursday evening.

Hundreds were gathered in Union Square, seeking answers and demanding justice in the shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, whose deaths at the hands of police officers were captured on cellphone video.

The shocking immediacy and intimacy of the Facebook live-stream video capturing Castile's death inside his car has reverberated with many in New York. Andre T. Mitchell, founder of Man Up Inc., a Brooklyn-based organization that works to building bridges between the community and police, said the video destroys advancements in trust.

"It disrupts and it crumbles all of the progress that's been made, it's unfortunate," said Mitchell. "It just sets us back."

Imho, I don't believe that much progress has been made.
Show us all the police demanding these kinds of officers be immediately fired since Tamir Rice, or John Crawford or Regina Boyd were murdered.
Show us all the police that have admitted there is a huge problem with sociopaths with God complexes in police departments across the country.
It's not veterans coming home from war. It's not lack of training. They are trained to be liars, to hide beatings and threats and make themselves appear to be victims "just fighting hardened criminals". It's that sociopaths are attracted to positions of power.
It's a system that has been run by sociopaths for decades and they have every avenue of CYA for themselves at the ready and unions with deep pockets to boot.

Real progress won't be made until people stop looking down at the other as a collective, uniform, undifferentiated and hostile, and see them as people to be treated as people, as equals. That kind of condescension leads to distrust and consistently bad assumptions as to motives, and encourages wrongly attributing the acts of one or a few to everybody in the group.

In this case, what happened in Mississippi and in Minnesota can only apply to NYC Af-Am/police relations if the police are the "other."

I hope that the police in NYC don't view every black in the city as being just like those who did the shootings last weekend in Chicago. I mean, it's the same kind of corrosive, flawed logic.

look at the photos in the news link.
Good people in the USA are fighting hard against the legacy of police brutality and violence. The Obama admin is conducting civil rights investigations of these shootings.
But when the RCP show up to try to hijack protests, they make the situation even worse. They don't give a shit about anything but their twisted propaganda, and they detract from real protest by people who actually care about justice in the USA.

To use a police shooting for RCP agitprop? How insulting and regressive can you get.
