Oakland: Six arrests in anti-police protest that shut down I-880

Source: East Bay Times

OAKLAND -- At least five arrests were made during a night of anti-police protests that saw Interstate 880 shut down, store windows shattered and the downtown police headquarters vandalized, authorities said Friday.

A sixth person was detained but then cited and released.

Authorities said the arrests were for assault on a police officer, vandalism and attempting to break into a business.

An arrest was made for assault on a California Highway Patrol officer who had bottles thrown at him.

it wasn't working before... it's not going to work now.

The only thing it accomplishes is pissing off and alienating other people.

We've protested, wrote our legislators, testified before congress, sang about it, rapped about it. And yet here we are. No charges. Not convictions
What is you answer on how to resolve the problem of people of color being gunned down by the police?

I am shocked... shocked I tell you...

Seriously though...

I think it's a matter of looking for opportunity to engage and work on the weaknesses in both cultures. I think there should be more police of color who also hold a high standard.

No simple answers but the adversarial approach doesn't seem to be working so maybe something else... Instead of 'fuck the police' I suggest working with them and visa versa...

I am also absolutely certain that blocking people from getting to their jobs that provide for their family will not get you where you want to be.

It has worked very effectively previously and seems to do so again. Interrupting the flow of traffic and the economic activity that overlaps with it consistently gets news coverage and attention from city hall. It does not piss off or alienate me, actually several friends of mine were at that protest.

because of these protests, I'm sure you'd be pissed off. Or if you were late picking your kid from daycare and it cost you the overtime, I'm sure you'd be pretty upset.
You say it wouldn't because you agree with the cause they are protesting for. If they were blocking the road to show solidarity with the NRA or Jewish people demanding reparations from Egypt, or to demand networks put out more episodes of Jericho, you'd be incredibly angry over the situation. Everyone has a cause they feel strongly about. But that doesn't mean that everyone feels strongly about yours.
I'd laugh heartily seeing those protestors getting arrested for blocking the road. Standing on the sidewalk is peaceably protesting, which is protected in the constitution. Blocking the street, delaying someone's day-to-day activities and forcing yourself into another person's face is not.

Taking out their frustrations on working class people is just stupid and alienates people who might otherwise support them.

And if the government ignores you, welcome to the damn club. They are a bunch of 1%ers, and won't give a crap about what happens to any of us.
We all have things that we want to protest. But no one has the right to endanger the lives of others by walking out on the highway and block traffic. I don't care how angry you are. The people on the highway have no more say in the situation than you do. But they all have places to go and things to do.
There was a story where one woman missed her flight to visit her dying mother because of a similar protest. I know if I caused something like that, I'd feel like crap. But I don't see any empathy like that from anyone in that movement.
There was another story where a driver went through the crowd to try to get by, and injured a protestor. And the rest of the protestors didn't even want to let the ambulance through to take care of one of their own. Immature, selfish, idiots.
Look at the gif that I posted in #12. How can that possibly be safe. Any driver, tired from his day could have killed one of those idiots that got onto the highway.

Lots of talk about ignorance in this thread especially about BLM. BLM is what? 2 years old. People of color have been getting killed by LEO for at least 100 years. Yet I see no discussion about what might prompt people to do the things you are bitching about.

Want to see ignorance? Look in a fucking mirror.

Were just saying shutting down the highways is counter-productive and doesn't work. It didn't work when protestors were doing it back when Michael Brown and Eric Garner were killed. Like I said, (imo) the protests need to be focused on police stations and/or at government facilities, not a public expressway.
