Texas Lt. Gov.: Dallas BLM Protesters 'Hypocrites' For Running From Gunfire
Source: Talking Points Memo
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) on Friday afternoon railed against the people who took part in the protest in Dallas on Thursday night, charging that the protesters were "hypocrites" because, as he framed it, they were anti-police but expected the police to protect them once the shooting started.
"All those protesters last night, they ran the other way, expecting the men and women in blue to turn around and protect them. What hypocrites," Patrick said on Fox News. "I understand the First Amendment. I understand freedom of speech, and I defend it. It is in our Constitution and is in our soul, but you can't go out on social media and mainstream media and everywhere else and say that the police are racist or police are hateful or the police are killers."
Patrick said that the officers killed in the shooting at the scene of the protest "lost their life protecting people who were protesting against them."
Patrick recognized that the Dallas protest over the deadly shootings of black men by police in Louisiana and Minnesota on Thursday night was peaceful, but he placed some blame for the deadly shooting on those who speak out against police violence.

(1,473 posts)Police Have No Duty To Protect Individuals
Warren v. District of Columbia is one of the leading cases of this type. Two women were upstairs in a townhouse when they heard their roommate, a third woman, being attacked downstairs by intruders. They phoned the police several times and were assured that officers were on the way. After about 30 minutes, when their roommate's screams had stopped, they assumed the police had finally arrived. When the two women went downstairs they saw that in fact the police never came, but the intruders were still there. As the Warren court graphically states in the opinion: "For the next fourteen hours the women were held captive, raped, robbed, beaten, forced to commit sexual acts upon each other, and made to submit to the sexual demands of their attackers."
The three women sued the District of Columbia for failing to protect them, but D.C.'s highest court exonerated the District and its police, saying that it is a "fundamental principle of American law that a government and its agents are under no general duty to provide public services, such as police protection, to any individual citizen." [4] There are many similar cases with results to the same effect. [5]
In the Warren case the injured parties sued the District of Columbia under its own laws for failing to protect them. Most often such cases are brought in state (or, in the case of Warren, D.C.) courts for violation of state statutes, because federal law pertaining to these matters is even more onerous. But when someone does sue under federal law, it is nearly always for violation of 42 U.S.C. 1983 (often inaccurately referred to as "the civil rights act" . Section 1983 claims are brought against government officials for allegedly violating the injured parties' federal statutory or Constitutional rights.

Out of control, numbskull police killing mostly black men for no reason at all, no provocation, just out of sheer racist hate and stupidity and possibly an excess of testosterone is what caused this. BLM was just protesting the stupid hateful racist killings by police, as they had a right to. The guy that targeted the police was wrong, so wrong, but he wasn't part of BLM, far as we know. Were the police trying to protect the protestors or themselves. From the video I saw, it looked like the later and not the former. They seemed very focused on themselves and their peers only.

(194 posts)I want to ask him, how long should we accept being POLICED to death, without justice being handed down to those who are quick to use deadly force without cause? How is fighting for a more just and honest police force, not being PRO police? I may not like the name "Black Lives Matter" because All Lives Matter, but I also know they are not the cause of violence, they are the result of it. Politicians like this, love to run to the welcoming arms of right wing media, and use subtle racially charged language (as if black people are too fuc&*% stupid to understand their racial dog whistle); but they never go on these same outlets and show similar concern about the tragic loss of life of innocent men of color being killed by the unjustified use of deadly force.
I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries suffered by police at the hands of this gunman, but I am not completely surprised by it. Our community as a whole is reaching a breaking point by one unjustified killing after another by police caught on video, and we need much more than monetary settlements to ease our frustration. We need justice for those who perpetrate these acts, and justice for the victims and their families who are left to deal with the aftermath. Because as a community we know, that for every act of police brutality that comes to light because someone was able to capture it on video, there are so many more other stories that we will never be told, and will never see the light of day.
When we talk about race across racial lines, groups like Black Lives Matter condense the question down to something like, Do you think a white life is more valued than a black life? And of course the answer is going to be no, whether they believe it or not, its just the politically correct thing to say and the response is automatic. But we need to ask a different question that doesn't even mention race, but goes to the heart of our humanity and our connection to each other, and might at least make a person take a few seconds to think. And the question is this, "Do you think the love you have for your family, is more valuable than the love I have for mine?" And the power of that truth, is at the heart of our fight for equal justice under the law.

(16,975 posts)and were paid to protect the crowd, who by the way, weren't the target. Top down: if so-called leaders, and I use the term loosely for jerks like this, did their job, there would be less racial tension. But no, uneducated clods like this foment hatred and encourage hostility between all groups.
