Cleveland Police Ask For Emergency Suspension Of Open Carry Laws During Republican Convention

Source: Think Progress

Ohio is an “open carry” state which allows gun owners to carry them in plain sight. People have been exercising this right around the site of the Republican convention:

Strangely, in the area around the convention, “tennis balls, metal-tipped umbrellas or canned goods” are prohibited. But AR-15s or other firearms are not. But now, the Cleveland Police Union has made an emergency request to suspend open carry for the duration of the Republican convention.

“We are sending a letter to Gov. Kasich requesting assistance from him. He could very easily do some kind of executive order or something — I don’t care if it’s constitutional or not at this point,” Cleveland Police Union president Stephen Loomis told CNN.
The request may be related to the violence in Baton Rogue, where three police officers were killed today. (Loomis also blamed Obama for those shootings, saying he had “blood on his hands.”)

The request will put Governor Kasich in an awkward position. In general Republicans argue that open-carry laws are an important party of the right to bear arms and improve public safety. The research does not support this argument.

To ban guns at the convention in an 'open carry' state would be "duplicitous."

"If it takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun" what are they doing when they disarm the good guys?

Remember that one gentleman holding his weapon. His picture spread around the world as a suspect for well over an hour before word came down that he wasn't. A nut bag could have shot him, trying to play hero.

It's part of the Constitution of the Sate of Ohio, and always has been.

Ohio has always been a traditional Open Carry state.

Always.

That is why no one short of amending the state constitution can do anything to stop it from happening, they would be breaking the law so hard not one court would support them.

The police union chief is an absolute moron to even say this, he wants the ability to ignore any law that he doesn't like at the moment.

The RNC is designated as a National Special Security Event by the US Department of Homeland Security, which entitled Cleveland to a $50 million federal grant toward its security plan. According to bids the city has posted to its website and reports from local news outlets, so far Cleveland has spent the money on:

◾2,000 sets of riot gear
◾2,000 steel batons
◾325 sets of tactical armor
◾300 patrol bicycles, with accompanying riot gear
◾25 rifle scopes
◾10,000 flexible handcuffs

Other supplies include bulletproof helmets, pepper spray, two-point slings (used to carry rifles) and inmate mattresses. The Cleveland PD also asked the Chicago Police Department to loan it three bearcats, and Taser International is loaning the department 300 body cameras that can be attached to riot suits. The city also put out a bid for tear gas, according to the Washington Post, and it recently upped its protest insurance coverage from $9.5 million to $50 million.

Really now, I think I'm beginning to understand how the police can ignore my other constitutional rights as well.

it will help Hillary in the polls bigly.

Honestly, how effin stupid do you have to be to let emotional and potentially drunk people (given the alcohol they serve at these things) run around with guns? Almost like "drunk college students at the frat house or bar should have guns."

I'm sure the NRA is having a hissy fit over that request. God forbit should someones 2nd amendment rights get violated. I'm just curious how many of the NRA's congressional b*itches will be squirming in their seats knowing how many of their gun toting crazies are running around outside.

Why is it ok to ask for special protection for one group but not for any other group at any other time? Especially since that is the group that favors and fosters open carry. What ironic bullshit.

I thought we'd be safer if we all carried guns? I love it. The governor said he wouldn't (and couldn't) suspend the law. That would require martial law. Of course, we might get there before this is over. Takes me back to 1968...
