Bodies of indigenous leader and two sons found in northern Colombia .
Monday, 25 June 2012 16:46 David Spencer Seconi

The bodies of an indigenous leader and his two sons were excavated from a communal grave, approximately one year after their disappearance following a major drug cartel's incursion into northern Colombia, reported Radio Caracol.

Drug trafficking organization "The Rastrojos" reportedly entered a region known as Bajo Cauca, just outside of the municipality of Zaragosa in Antioquia, between June 24 and June 26 2011. On June 25 the governor of the Zenu indigenous community, Jorge Mejia Estrada, and his two sons went missing.

Officials fear that they will discover the bodies of others who disappeared during the attack.

The Zenu, whose origins can be traced back to 200 B.C., were decimated following the Spanish conquest, yet pockets of the indigenous tribe remain in the country, some in government-sponsored areas located in Bajo Cauca.

Indigenous tribes have suffered a disproportionately high amount from the Colombian conflict, often as a result of weak or unheeded claims to land, higher poverty levels and weaker connections to the state, resulting in a lack of any permanent government system of protection or justice. The Zenu were particularly affected by the armed conflict in 2011, with paramilitary attacks killing 13 members of the tribe following the Rastrojo presence in June.

Colombian Air Force aided 2001 massacre: AUC leader .
Monday, 25 June 2012 09:33 Brandon Barrett

A former AUC leader claimed Colombia's Air Force lent air support to a paramilitary operation against FARC guerrillas that killed at least 24 people in 2001.

Elkin Casarrollo Posada, a high-ranking member of the AUC's Calima Bloc, said that during an AUC raid known as the El Naya massacre, he was in radio contact with Freddy Antonio Cadavid Acevedo, a Colombian solider who agreed to provide a fighter plane to ward off FARC guerrillas in the border region between the southwestern departments of Cauca and Valle del Cauca.

The 15-day paramilitary operation took place in April 2001 in the village of El Naya and resulted in the death of between 24 and 200 civilians, according to various estimates.

Similarly, the Prosecutor General's Office received information from Eladio Vivero, who was kidnapped by the AUC, that a commander called for air support from Colombia's Air Force in June 2001 and received two helicopters to help fight guerrilla soliders. He also alleged that after the helicopters fired on FARC rebels, the paramilitary leader was told to withdraw from the area by an army officer before another nearby military company advanced on their position.

According to the newspaper, the recent charges against retired police general Mauricio Santoyo, is the "tip of the iceberg" of U.S. criminal charges against Colombian officials with alleged ties to paramilitary and drug trafficking organizations.

Uribe either has the negatives or the Big Boys' blessings, otherwise he'd go the way of Manny Noriega.

Gosh. Which nation's banks are always getting fined for unknowingly laundering drug money?
