Plan would freeze UC, CSU fees if voters pass tax
Source: AP
Gov. Jerry Brown and Democratic leaders have come up with a plan to freeze tuition rates at California's public universities if voters approve a tax hike in November, the Senate leader said Monday.
Under the plan, lawmakers would move a budget-related bill that appropriates an extra $125 million each for University of California and California State University systems in the 2013-14 academic year, according to Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento.
The money would be made available to the UC system if the regents decide not to increase fees this year. CSU would have to rescind a $500 increase that is going into effect this fall.
"Our message is pretty clear: Middle-class students and their families have given enough and we want to provide them relief," Steinberg said. "It's contingent of course on the taxes passing in November. And if the taxes don't pass, then all bets will be off."

(15,189 posts)If education means that much to Brown, he would be for legalizing pot. Keep prices up for an ounce like $100.00 an ounce, or package joints like cigarettes and charge $40.00 a pack. Let the colleges grow weed to support alternative courses, and keep tuition down. Let the state allow who grows it, but keep medical Marijuana growers separate.
Make it still illegal (fines only) unless prescribed to grow it. Then in 10 years they can make it legal to grow for any reason to any adult. Use it to get California ahead in it's debt. That would be a better way to support schools and cities, and everyone gets more in the long run. I have no kids, I am a lesbian. I know why I should care about schools, but not everyone does. This would end a lot of begging from the state to causes that not everyone feels involves them.
