Nation's third largest oil facility leaks cancer-causing Benzene again

June 26, 2012
Deborah Dupre

The oil company with the highest accident rate in Louisiana, Exxon Mobil, reported a leak Monday that released 502, 000 barrels per day (bpd) in Baton Rouge and led to a release of Benzene, an ongoing human rights abuse that thousands of citizens recently opposed in writing.

The National Response Center reported that a leak at the nation’s third largest refinery, Exon Mobil in Baton Rouge, occurred around 7:56 local time and “was isolated and should be secured within an hour,” according to Reuters. snip

LABB reports, “The oil industry is so profitable because they can externalize their costs on poor states like Louisiana.

“Last year, Exxon’s two refineries in the state (Baton Rouge and Chalmette) had 133 accidents. Meanwhile, their profits exceeded $30 billion. There is a connection.” snip and more...

Where the hell is EPA? Where are the EPA penalties for the BP disaster? We need EPA NOW because the anti-regulation Repuke crowd has Louisiana by the balls.

Here is more information from the Lousiana Bucket Brigade, a watchdog group mentioned in the article, re: the June 14th leak:

Exxon lies to officials about size of benzene spill – community and workers sick from vapors

Letter to Lisa Jackson, head of EPA

snip:

LDEQ and EPA Response

We wrote to Cheryl Nolan, Assistant Secretary of LDEQ’s Office of Compliance and to Esteban Herrera, EPA Compliance Assurance and Enforcement Division Section Chief on Friday, June 15th.

Ms. Nolan responded by saying that the benzene release was less than reportable quantities and that everything was under control by Thursday morning. However, we had firsthand information that the release was not under control but was in fact ongoing. Two Region VI EPA EJ officials from the regions were even with us Thursday afternoon when we smelled it. Despite the information regarding ongoing odors and problems in the neighborhood, our concerns on Friday afternoon were dismissed by both LDEQ and EPA. snip

The environment is totally destroyed, the animals and people get sick, they dirty up the area so to continue to go same old same old. And they get their money from the Public to pay the fines!

Prison is the only answer. Along with more bans and changing over energy ways.
