Kerrey (D-NE) backs Romney's citizenship plan; Fischer (R-NE) doesn't (candidates for US Senate)

WASHINGTON The two candidates running to replace retiring Sen. Ben Nelson, differed Monday on key points in the immigration debate.
Former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey called on his fellow Democrats to support plans by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney that include a path to citizenship for those brought into the country illegally as children but who go on to serve in the military.
Republican State Sen. Deb Fischer of Valentine said that she opposes any such path and that border security must be the federal government's first priority.
Kerrey said that the two parties need to compromise and that Democrats should bring up Romney's proposal. Even if not perfect, Kerrey said, that proposal is better than anything in current law.

(1 post)Personally, I'd rather have more options towards citizenship than joining the military, however, joining the military is far, far from "almost slavery." It'll give you a career, college and discipline, something which is sorely lacking from this generation.

(27,449 posts)Or was it his plan months ago before he had to grovel at the feet of the teabaggers.
I can't remember where Romney stands on anything from one minute to the next.

(31,849 posts)Kerrey's position is a smart one to take ... in light of his challenger's position.
Kerrey holds out hope to the Hispanic electorate that there is a plan that provides a path to citizenship (even though it entails selling one's self to the military, which very few people will notice ... and Democrats would bring up) as opposed to his challenger's "get out and go to the back of the line" position.
However, for me, the problem with Kerrey's position is THERE IS NO rOMNEY IMMIGRATION PLAN and his saying there is puts rmoney to the Left of President Obama on this issue.

Sorry.
Also, anything that gives Romney an ounce of credibility helps him win in November.

(5,668 posts)can't afford that. would be like the RIAA going after it's customers (oh wait)
instead of say 1. enforcing the law on employers hiring illegals 2. Removing the incentive to cross that border... which to me is more rights for illegals, ie employers must provide safety, and min wage. Thus removing the incentive for big Contractors to hire illegals. My uncle was well a one person contractor. Which worked until he refused to break the law and hire undocumented workers. And thus had to run out of state and live in a car.
or say the RIAA quit charging $20 for an album 30 min long. o_O same thing on itunes. frankly music price should be based on reviews from customers. Legit ones. But thats IMHO

(16,916 posts)Come up with your own version of this plan, and when people compare it to Romney's, toss off a one liner like "Is that Romney's plan this week? I can't keep up with the changes" or "I always wondered if Romney was a secret liberal, too bad he's got to pander to the Right Wing extremists who run his party."
WHY did you have to go and agree with the man trying to take the country down the road to Hell?
Un-god-damned-believable...
