‘The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore’ canceled by Comedy Central
Source: Zap2It
The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore will call it a day after Thursdays episode.
Comedy Central has canceled the half-hour series that replaced The Colbert Report on Jan. 19, 2015, making Nightly the first of the recent wave of late-night newcomers to shutter.
Wilmore informed his staff of the cablers decision on Monday.
In the near term, Comedy Central will slide Chris Hardwicks pop culture quiz show @Midnight to the 11:30 p.m. slot that follows The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

(14,564 posts)Noah is horrible, all the talent they had on that show and hiw they turned it over to him is head scratching, and Wilmore is infinitely better than Noah ...
And, I too still mourn losing, JS. He was truly brilliant, the toughest, smartest and sharpest voice we had.
PatSeg
(47,439 posts)He is no Jon Stewart, but I've kept my expectations realistic. When Stewart took over The Daily Show years ago, it took a while to adjust to him. I would have never expected him to become such an extraordinary television personality.
I really like Larry Wilmore, though there were aspects of the show that needed some work.

(57,089 posts)his staff (extremely talented as they are) so much for his panels, I enjoyed the show.
PatSeg
(47,439 posts)but I never cared for the panel segment. I often fast-forwarded through it.
I am sorry to see the program end. It needed some tweaking, but there was a lot to work with.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)sometimes more but usually skipped the panels and whatever. I like him a lot in spite of some of his run-with-the-crowd coverage of Hillary, which would just cause me to exit and delete. I hope he surfaces somewhere else good soon.
PatSeg
(47,439 posts)I always enjoyed his segments on The Daily Show. He is very funny. I didn't care for all the other players on his how and sometimes the writing after the first segment was rather weak.
I just figured that they would work on the show and let it evolve. If any of us were to watch episodes of The Daily Show in the first year or so, I think we would be disappointed. I wasn't a huge fan of Jon Stewart until later on.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)He's too talented to disappear.
PatSeg
(47,439 posts)he has been around for a long time, but often behind the camera as a writer or producer. I got the feeling that Wilmore's show didn't have a budget equal to The Daily Show. Sometimes it seemed a little cheezy.
Hopefully he'll show up again soon.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)of lower budget, but perhaps that was mostly the format. Lower light levels? Cozier set design? It's been so long since I watched a whole episode that I don't have a good picture. Well, it's really about him. I'll take him in a box.
PatSeg
(47,439 posts)if the whole show were more like the first segment, it would have done better. He didn't need so many sidekicks and goofy skits. The one bit I couldn't stand was that "Nightly! Nightly!" one with Grace - it couldn't have been much dumber.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)skit can be funny but grates way too often to look forward to. No matter the host, the opening commentaries on current events were what I liked best.
Also the low-key Daily Show interviews with real people, by Assif Mandvi for instance--some were the funniest things on TV. "You do realize this is being recorded...?" Lol!
I loved Assif Mandvi. Overall The Daily Show had extraordinary writers and talent. I was hoping Wilmore could pull something off that was equal, but except for the opening commentaries, we often got some rather slapstickish, silly segments that were more loud than witty.
It does feel like Comedy Central pulled the plug awfully abruptly. I wouldn't have been surprised if they'd made some changes, but it doesn't seem like they were that interested in making it work.
Greybnk48
(10,168 posts)and funny, but I never warmed up to the format of his new show. He really did not need a guest panel. I think he could have carried the show much better by himself or with the usual one guest.
I hope he gets another spot soon.
Cosmocat
(14,564 posts)I watched the first two segments and not the panels.
He wasnt stewart, but nobody else is close except maher.
Noah is horrid.

(2,542 posts)I stopped watching recently because I got tired of seeing the show fall into the same False Equivalence Vortex as the rest of the media. First they covered the primary as if it were their job to spread every RWNJ lie about Clinton that they could get their hands on. Listening to some of the "contributors" demonstrate how little they know about politics became very depressing, in a "Wow, these idiots are who gets TV time these days?" kind of way. When they turned HRC into a laser-eyed Godzilla monster just because Donald Trump is a braying jackass, I had enough and removed it from my Hulu queue.

(28,394 posts)I really like Larry. Like others posted, however, I never stayed for the panels. He really didn't have very good second string. I always wished he would do a solo show like John Oliver.
Daemonaquila
(1,712 posts)He didn't need a second string, and has been better solo. But I suspect there's more to it than the network just not liking some things about his format/supporting cast. That can be changed.

(12,882 posts)Neither even come CLOSE to filling the shoes they tried to. Shows come and go, but every now and then, one will set standards that simply can't be topped. All in the Family, MASH, Seinfeld, Colbert and Stewart. Others will rise from obscurity, but none will truly replace those that blazed trails.
TreasonousBastard

(17,086 posts)They did some pretty good stuff, but the show never seemed to kick into second gear and grow. I think they were too complacent with their format. I hope to see more of Wilmore!

(1,712 posts)Let's see - the embarrassing Samantha Bee is still on. But Larry Wilmore, who was the perfect mix of serious and funny, cutting and scarcastic, gets canned? Why? Did he talk too honestly, especially about race? Hell, even Trevor Noah, Jon Stewart's mostly harmless replacement who I had such high hopes for but who still hasn't found his legs, is holding strong. And replaced with a freaking stupid pop culture quiz show?
I hope Wilmore has a way to go after whoever thinks Wilmore peed in his coffee, and that he gets another brilliant gig soon.
The2ndWheel
(7,947 posts)Noah still hosts The Daily Show, not Some Other Named Show with Trevor Noah, so he's probably got more leeway because of that. Wilmore had his own show, he wasn't just replacing Colbert on the Colbert Report, and it didn't seem to be working.
Shankapotomus
(4,840 posts)He seemed so comfortable as a host right out of the gate, total pro, quick, witty. Even Jon needed time to build up his chops, but Larry...I never thought I was watching someone who needed time to learn the ropes.
Whatever reason the show was canned, it couldn't have been Wilmore. Sometimes these trends just run their course and people don't want to invest enough time in the "new thing" to appreciate it.
I think if had Wilmore's show just been Wilmore, he could have easily carried it himself.

(254 posts)I, like others watched a couple of episodes and was disappointed with the show. I felt there was too much to do about minorities. This might have worked on BET or similar channels.
I really thought that John Oliver would have been a much better choice to take over for Stewart. I enjoyed his anchoring while Stewart was on his. Now, Oliver is on HBO and I really, really, really like what he does and am an avid viewer. Last nights episode was so good that I am keeping the recording.
Yes, I did give Noah a chance to win my audience, but alas, just like the Nightly Show, I feel abandoned. What was Comedy Central thinking by hiring a foreigner to discuss our politics? I suppose it was based on the recommendation by Stewart that got him the job.
I suspect it is not long before Noah's show will also be cancelled.

(95,337 posts)Those 2 together on the Daily Show are funny as hell. They could do a Comedy Central version of 'Crossfire'. Klepper does an awesome job of playing the worst stereotypes of a Tea-Party, Trump loving fundie (although I've read he's pretty liberal off-camera) and Roy Woods Jr plays an amazing counterpoint to Klepper.
I've love some of the skits these 2 have done together and I think they both deserve a show, perhaps a combo show with both of them would be pretty funny!

(6,399 posts)Neither of them generates the simplicity of good clips to go viral with easy and quick ideas and concepts tied to humor.
Stewart and Colbert nailed their delivery of such items in a way that captivated and delighted those that share such things online, which built up online streaming viewers and bulked up the broadcast edition of the main show as well.
Essentially, neither of these shows generates anything viral. Nothing from Noah has gone viral since he took over and I can't remember seeing anything from Wilmore trend upward either.

(14,093 posts)Comedy Central has a turd on their hands with his toothless Daily Show and needs to fix the situation ASAP.
If they'd handled the transition better, they could have given Oliver a head-up before he bailed for HBO and had him. Or given it to Sam Bee.
They need someone insightful, with passion and political heart, not some smug kid who goes for easy jokes.

(7,888 posts)As others had stated, this is the last show on Comedy Central worth watching. As a Caucasian supporter of BLM, this is a loss for me. Mr. Wilmore and cast are talented, creative and hilarious. I did not love every panel discussion, but every one of them helped me relate to the community of color.
I will contact the owners of the network to express my disdain and disappointment.

(135,425 posts)I liked that show. I thought LW addressed some pretty tough questions in a real way.
Why they didn't just give the "Daily" slot to LW in the first place is beyond me.
I've nothing against Trevor Noah, but I do think an American is best suited to comment on American politics. There's nuance there that can't be learned overnight, and often it is obvious he is just reading the lines the writers create for him.

ATTENTION ATTENTION
Trevor Noah is NOT Jon Stewart. Was never meant to be. That era ended. Those days are gone.
ATTENTION ATTENTION
Why would you expect or want someone to be like Jon in the first place?
Jon was tired of doing the show and it showed in his effort and ratings.
Trevor is doing a great job for his first season. Did you even watch the show for Jon's first season? It wasn't even a shadow of Jon and the Daily Show in its prime, totally different shows.
To also answer those that through John Oliver name out there, he would not have done it. More importantly, he wouldn't leave HBO now for any amount of money. The complete freedom to say whatever the fuck you want is hard to beat.
Samantha Bee didn't want it either. She wanted her own show, not taking over someone else's show.
I personally feel they should have put Larry's show on break and gone back to the drawing board on format and delivery.
The problem with so many is a resistance to change. Jon and Steven are gone. They are not coming back.
No one can do what they do. No one should have expected that.
