Donald Trump to court black vote at Detroit church
Source: MSN/USA Today
DETROIT In an effort to reach out to African-American voters, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will make his first foray into black churches with a visit to the Great Faith Ministries Church in Detroit on Saturday and tape an interview with the church's Bishop Wayne T. Jackson.
Jackson told his parishoners that the visit was planned and released a statement early Monday morning that the interview with Trump, which will be broadcast on his Impact Television Network, was neither a rally nor an endorsement of Trump's candidacy.
"Media outlets throughout the country are seeking to get access to the presidential candidates, and we have been afforded that opportunity with Mr. Trump and hopeful that we will get to interview Mrs. Clinton as well," Jackson said in a statement. "The goal for this interview is to get real answers and Trumps views and plans on policies that affect our community."
Jackson said Trump will have an opportunity to outline his policies in front of the congregation during the on-air interview.

Will anyone ask Trump about his efforts to suppress the vote under the guise of in-person voting fraud, which almost never happens.

(28,136 posts)However the fact that it is taped and not live has me suspicious even though it's in front of the congregation.
Trump is a coward.

If the church was engaging in a non-partisan activity, then they should already have Hillary scheduled. Otherwise it's a political rally for Trump -- tax the f**kers!

(18,636 posts)That's the republican party via individual secretary of states. I don't believe Trump has even stated an opinion on voter ID laws or early voting.
I'm sure there will be many difficult questions about his policy on minorities once elected. This is good because he'll have to either say things his base will recoil from or explain himself in a way that further alienates him from minorities.
Regardless what he says now, this is not something the Trump campaign has been looking forward to.

(129,096 posts)Since the appearance (assuming it's not suddenly cancelled due to some other "scheduling conflict" is expected to be recorded, he wouldn't care about going because it'll be just like any other "reality TV" taping and they will butcher the video beyond recognition so they can use the leftover pieces in an ad where he can say "See??!!! 'My African-Americans!!11!!!!1! They LOVE me!!11!11!'"

To turn out all the righties from 3 states and 15 counties, to show 'there's something going on here.' It's funny that what's going on is he's losing, bungling every day, trying to simultaneously appeal to Minorities and nazis.
It's also funny that his rallying cry is 'look at this crowd, there's really something going on'. And at the same time, he thinks Prez O. is head of a 'Moslem take over the US' conspiracy -- about 3 high profile shootings (out of hundreds) make trump think 'there's something going on.' It's not that the Prez is weak or inept, maybe 'there's something else going on here'.
What kind of something going on is he going to use on those rubes? Build the wall, or let them stay? Is he going to tell the old white crowd with a few paid Minorities that he really cares about the poor Blacks in the Hill District, a 15 minute walk, from the Convention center, away? Will he talk about how much he loves the Blacks and say that the top cops could solve all the crime in the neighborhood if they could just be allowed a bit more leeway to ignore civil rights and legal police procedure?
I saw Chicago PD's brass on another o.p. today say 'give us your secret master crime plan, please, Mr Republican Nominee, sir.' He's pure unvarnished orange bull hockey, piled up in a blubbery snowman form.

a bit after noon., at the Convention Center. He snuck in, I was not tipped off by any group that he would be here. I've looked at his campaign site, and have been scanning my e-mails from all orgs to see if any news of him coming to town could be had. It wasn't a rally, it was a convention of energy producers letting him be the keynote speaker. Then he went up to the Mellon's Duquesne Club for a fundraiser.

I only heard about him being in town on the front page, here, after 1 pm. Looked online, and saw that protests had followed him to the Duquesne Club, and hustled down there. Got there at 1:45, and it was all over. But at least I know what that helicopter circling the city this a.m. was about, now.
My dad's old union, Local 66 Operating Engineers, pulled out of sponsorship of the shale conference, in protest of them giving the orange nazi dummy a speaking slot, and the only "union support" he could boast of in media was from a retired plumber B.A. from an Ohio local union. "Joe" the "Plumber" 's buddy, I guess.

So he had no high profile incursion into the city, and r-u-n-n-d-o-f-f right away. But I guess he gets bragging rights that he campaigned in the heart of blue downtown Pittsburgh. Wish I'd known he was making his appearance, but it was a blink and you miss it hit and run visit.
Of course, there will no doubt more chances to invite him to leave my city in the next month and a half. Like the bad penny, or previous repug prez candidates, I'm sure he'll be back around again.

Jackson admits that while the Impact Networks partnership with DIRECTV is a monumental achievement, it is not the first partnership of its kind for the fledgling network. In 2011, we were able to partner with Dish Network, which gave us a much broader national audience covering the continental United States. Then we got with Comcaste which gave us Michigan, Arkansas, Kentucky and Indiana, explains Jackson. Impact Network would go on to strike similar deals with the Bahamas and African nations, and put faith-based programs in 950 million households worldwide, a real coup détat for African American Christian television. The addition of DIRECTV access adds 20 million more viewing households to Impact Networks viewing audience. Minority- and women-owned broadcasts represents only five percent of all broadcast currently airing in the United States.
This was a wonderful development for AT&T to recognize this need for diversity in their broadcasting, says Jackson. I am a firm believer that lives are changed through what we see and what we hear and we are responsible for what we bring on the air to impact individuals who are our viewers. Thats why we call it the Impact Network, adds the entrepreneurially spirited ecclesiastic.
Jackson readily admits that initially there was some discussion about basing the networks headquarters in the suburbs, but almost instantly brushed aside the temptation to move to more comfortable digs and keep the network based in Detroit. We are helping to power the revitalization of Detroit. While we have Dan Gilbert, Roger Penske and Mike Illitch who are doing great things our city, there are African Americans doing great things in Detroit, and we are going to tell those stories.
In addition to gospel programming, the Impact Network will provide educational and life skills development programming along with family-oriented health and fitness shows, financial wellbeing programming and lifestyle and entertainment fare.
