Tropical Depression 9, the area previously called Invest 99L, could strengthen and become a tropical storm later Monday (Aug. 29), the National Hurricane Center said in its morning update.
As of 4 a.m., the "poorly organized" depression was in the extreme southeastern Gulf of Mexico, forecasters said. The depression was about 155 miles west-southwest of Key West, Fla., and about 95 miles west-northwest of Havana, Cuba. It's moving west at 9 mph and is expected to turn west-northwest Monday "followed by a slow northwestward motion" on Tuesday, forecasters said.
The center of the depression will pass north of the north coast of western Cuba on Monday and will move farther into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.
