Ex-deputy in South Carolina spared charges after throwing student

Source: Reuters

A South Carolina prosecutor has decided against criminally charging a former sheriff's deputy who was caught on video flipping a black high school student out of her chair and throwing her across a classroom, local media reported on Friday.

Columbia, South Carolina-based television station WLTX reported Fifth District Solicitor Dan Johnson has also dismissed charges of disturbing school that had been brought against the student and another girl in the classroom who spoke out against the incident. The deputy, who is white, was fired last year.

An attorney for the deputy and another lawyer who represented the girl could not be reached for comment.

A video of the arrest in October 2015 at Spring Valley High School in Columbia quickly went viral, reigniting concerns that the proliferation of police in U.S. schools can criminalize behavior once handled more quietly by school officials.

Their local DA is not going to do it because he/she needs their cooperation to do their jobs. Cops know they are generally above the law which makes behavior like this possible.

1 set for minoritys and women where we can be hurt with impunity and the press is more concerned about the poor boy who had to suffer in jail and have his scholarship jeopardized than they are the girl he raped.

1 set for the rich, where they can get away with just about anything

1 set for the so called law enforcers where they get away with crimes, even when filmed and it's the people who protest who are painted as the terrorist.

...since when do we need to call ex-deputy/security guards into a classroom because a student refuses to turn off their cellphone. I'm dated or out of touch or living in a bubble b/c never happened when I was in public school in Fayetteville NC 20 years ago...there were drugs, fights, students who disrespected teachers, etc...students from every ethnic background and income level (no 1%-ers).

This never happened...everything was handled by the teachers and the school administrators. Is it the threat of lawsuits against the school? A new zero tolerance attitude after Columbine, etc?

Any public educators here who can "educate" me about this?
