(28,264 posts)I'm a fifth-generation Texan, a lifelong Democrat, and as long as smug blue-staters see fit to blanket-insult the entire population of my state here on DU, I will call them out on it. Happy landings to you.

(5,764 posts)are either wingnuts, or are so abysmally ignorant, they're likely to vote for Trump. Texas will definitely go to the white nationalist. That does not speak favorably of the people here.

(28,264 posts)Congrats, you're one-up on the blue-staters who proclaim the entire population of Texas to be nothing more than a bunch of Rick Perry wannabes. And I agree with you---Trump will probably take the state. That's unfortunate, but it's also correctable. Like I said, bon voyage to you.

(25,862 posts)to make blanket statements about all of our states. "What's wrong with That State? is a common refrain. Or, the people in that state totally deserve the horrors that are happening there, as if every single person voted for their Governor or legislature.
I am fond of saying that we live in a country with fifty wonderful states. And while there are some states you couldn't pay me to live in, we still have fifty wonderful states. Because those states I think are wonderful are going to be thought of as totally horrible by some others. Plus, every time I'm about to say, "This particular state is just awful and I don't understand why every sensible person there doesn't just leave," someone will post some genuinely felt praise of that state, and who am I to say that person is wrong?

(290 posts)I thought it was quite a nice little town, and the people we met there were very friendly. The funniest part was that it seemed to us that it was the moth capital of the world. We were there in late April, and at night the moths were everywhere, and some of them seemed like they could grow up to be Mothra huge. Days later, we still had moths in the car. I've always wondered if that was normal for the area at that time of year, or just a strange fluke that we happened to be present for.
You're absolutely right about the night sky in the desert, though. I lived in Tucson AZ until I emigrated to Canada a few years back, and I always loved the desert at night. When you go out far enough from any cities or towns, it seems like you can see very single star in the universe!

(95,337 posts)You know the argument that gun nuts have told me is that many of these shootings happen in areas that are 'gun-free zones'.
Texas is off the deepend of gun craziness so there goes that argument.
Having said my rant, I hope someone gets this asshole shooter and that no one is harmed.

(15,396 posts)Open carry or concealed both need a Texas LTC. They can not legally carry inside the school building. Or outside if a school project/activity is happening.
I hope the person shot will recover

(3,194 posts)There are always 3 times as many shooters than there actually are.
So if there are 2 or 3 shooters, it means there is 1. Cops will always overstate, that way they can exercise their authority a little longer, and maintain the TERROR in people's minds so that when they come locked and loaded, they can lock everything down for several extra hours.

(100,080 posts)When I was in elementary school (80's) the worst things we had to worry about were fires and bad air quality. We never in a million years heard the term "active shooter". We never heard of a guy with an AK47 walking into a crowded building to start killing everything that moves. And now that that's a thing - scares the living shit out of me! And yeah fuck the NRA and the Tea Party. They created this mess. They get to fix it.
And fuck Mitch McConnell too who wants to give the NRA a free pass to approve whatever SCOTUS justice they want.
