Close to the equinox, sun sets at about 6pm local time for everyone. France uses daylight savings time, and geographically, would fit GMT better than Central European Time (Hitler put them on CET, and they never came off). So call it 7:30pm.

It doesn't go up Mont Blanc, but to the adjacent Aguille du Midi.

They are in no danger, but if the thing isn't moving, then there they are.

I guess you couldn't really beat the view. Definitely something to brag about in years to come..."Oh, when I was stuck in the gondola of the Panoramic Mont Blanc connecting the Aiguille du Midi to Helbronner peak"..... said with a jejune air of world weary amusement

Cable cars failure traps dozens over French Alps

Forty-five people remain stuck on a series of cable cars high above the glaciers of Mont Blanc in the French Alps, a local official has said.

Georges-Francois Leclerc, the prefect of the Haute-Savoie region, says initially 110 people were trapped, but 65 were airlifted out by helicopters.

The operation was suspended as night fell and will resume in the morning.

The cable cars are at "an altitude of about 3,800m (12,468ft)", officials said. The problem was caused by cables that got crossed for "unknown reasons".

They were trapped in 36 panoramic Mont Blanc pods, which seat a maximum of four people each.

The rescue operation was suspended for the night, but water, food and survival blankets were distributed.Initial reports from the French-Italian border suggest strong winds made wires cross over, but this has yet to be confirmed.

They've all been safely rescued now.

to the Aiguille-du-Midi, but have never taken the cable cars to Helbrunner. Even from the Aiguille-du-Midi, the view is sensational.
