N.D. governor to activate National Guard ahead of Friday pipeline ruling
Source: Billings Gazette
MANDAN, N.D. Gov. Jack Dalrymple said Thursday morning he will activate the North Dakota National Guard ahead of a federal judge's ruling on a request by the Standing Rock Sioux to stop the four-state Dakota Access oil pipeline.
A handful of Guard members will help provide security at traffic checkpoints near the site of a large protest, Dalrymple said.
Maj. Gen. Alan Dohrmann, the head of the Guard, said another 100 Guard members will be on standby if needed to respond to any incidents.
The move comes in advance of an expected ruling Friday on the Standing Rock Sioux Tribes request for an emergency injunction to halt construction of the pipeline, which will cross the Missouri River less than a mile north of the Standing Rock reservation. The tribe fears the pipeline will leak and contaminate its water supply and sacred sites, and its lawsuit claims the corps failed to consider the historical and cultural significance of that area.

How long will this story go on, until our world is absolutely free of indigenous people everywhere? Pretty damned dirty approach to life, isn't it?

(31,415 posts)Violence against Native Americans protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline is unjustified, and I share the concerns of Tribes in New Mexico that it should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Tribal members must be allowed to exercise their free speech rights without the threat of harassment. The use of dogs and pepper spray is deplorable and merits immediate intervention by the federal government. I am also extremely concerned about the lack of Tribal consultation, which is required by law to protect culturally important lands and sacred sites, especially in light of our nation's history of devastating environmental and cultural injustices against Tribes. And I support the courts order to halt construction while legal questions remain.

(12,232 posts)In a radio address on KLND Radio, Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Dave Archambault II encouraged all visitors and supporters to remain peaceful and prayerful.
Thousands of people, from members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, tribes across the nation and First Nations in Canada, to non-Native supporters in the United States and around the world, have stood in solidarity against the harm and destruction caused by the Dakota Access Pipeline, Archambault said. We have stood side by side in peaceful prayer.
With a federal court ruling only hours away on Friday, September 9, anticipation was heightened in the camps.
There is a lot at stake with the court decision tomorrow, Archaumbault said. We call upon all water protectors to greet any decision with peace and order. Even if the outcome of the courts ruling is not in our favor, we will continue to explore every lawful option and fight against the construction of the pipeline.
