Ruling ups support for Obama healthcare, still unpopular

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Voter support for President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul rose after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld it but most people still oppose the law, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll on Sunday.
The online survey showed increased backing from Republicans and, crucially, the political independents whose support will be essential to winning the November 6 presidential election.
Thirty-eight percent of independents support the healthcare overhaul in the poll conducted after the court ruled Thursday the law was constitutional. That was up from 27 percent from a Reuters/Ipsos poll taken days before the justices' ruling.
Among all registered voters, support for the law rose to 48 percent, from 43 percent before the court decision.

Crucial independents increased their support of the Affordable Care Act. This is indeed good news.

(35,392 posts)those who are "opposed" to "Obamacare" are all wrapped into one nice, tidy, and inaccurate lump.
A significant portion of those "opposed" to the bill are DISAPPOINTED that it wasn't single-payer (thus "disappointed in Obama" - another poll for another smear), or that it didn't cover EXACTLY what they wanted.

(3,077 posts)... I was going ot run into here and say the same thing. The lack of single payer and way too much kow towing to the bloated private insurance rig-a-ma-roll/fat "non profits" have a good 15% of the folks, imho, saying they are not FULLY satisfied with it, yet.

(634 posts)I am one of those of which you speak. This bill is better than nothing, but it is not what I voted for. Fully- blown " Medicare for everyone ". The Party has moved far enough to the right on economic issues; it is time to stop. If we can spend hundreds of billions of dollars to go overseas and kill people, we should be able to afford to have universal healthcare , just like the rest of the developed world.
That is the problem with polls; you can distort them any way you want.
I " disapprove " of the bill because it does not go far enough. Yet , when the results of the poll are reported. it is assumed that the disapproval is because I am against public healthcare. Far from it. I am glad it escaped the SCOTUS relativly unharmed.
Pisses me off, but what do we expect when we get our information from the "for-profit" news media.
I don't like the bill, but I'll take it over nothing at all.
However, I am still suspicious of the ruling in terms of the GOP election strategy; Is there some advantage for the GOP in this ruling?
I feel like I'm missing something...

(10,021 posts)own best interest. These seems to have worked with people I know. I can see and hear them go "hmmm". They hate Mr. Obama so much they may be willing to cut their own throats, which is just plain stupid.

(25,111 posts)BUT how can you fight against "such hatred" towards a man and his party?
The GOP's hatred supercedes their so called love for mankind.

(17,528 posts)I frankly can't see how ANY American can want to deprive others of health care. How un-American and selfish... if not pure EVIL!

(32,723 posts)It goes from 43% to 48% and just because it's not 50% the narrative is "most people oppose".
Of course THAT has NOTHING to do with the media refusal to tell America that Republicans are lying about it. They just report the lies as fact and act like mentioning the party of who said the lie is enough of a caveat.

(12,821 posts)The GOP has already turned the issue of America's health into hay bales the size of Issa's ego or Romney's offshore investments. So I agree: Dems must trumpet the benefits of this law to ALL Americans right now. It's EXACTLY what they need to do.

(2,749 posts)People have been brainwashed into believing this is socialized medicine. When they figure out they are going to have healthcare and that their kids won't have to have rotten teeth they will get on board. It needs to be implemented before the masses can figure out that Obama has done them a huge solid.

(164 posts)about 1/3 would like it repealed, 1/3 would like much more, and 1/3 like various aspects of ACA, but not others.
But lets do a ill conceived poll that doesn't reflect a slightly complex reality.

(9,753 posts)This issue has been so muddied by rightwing bushwah that people are "opposed" to it because they don't think they can understand it and so can't personally assess risk vs benefit.
However, ask them about ACA provision by provision, and they tend say "well, *that's* a good idea . . ."
Clear away the fog through clear and crisp messaging and approval will go through the roof. At least among those who haven't been completely brainwashed.

This number is shrinking as quickly as the opposition to gay marriage.
