Marine drill instructor accused of running a clothes dryer with a Muslim recruit inside

Source: The Washington Post

A Muslim Marine said he was called a terrorist and ordered into an industrial clothes dryer multiple times by a drill instructor who then turned it on, burning him, according to investigative documents that provide new details about the alleged abuse of recruits at the service’s training center at Parris Island, S.C.

“You’re going to kill us all the first chance you get aren’t you, terrorist?” the drill instructor thundered at the recruit, the new Marine later alleged, according to the documents that have not been released publicly but were reviewed by The Washington Post. “What are your plans? Aren’t you a terrorist?”

The issue of hazing and abuse at Parris Island surfaced March 18, when a 20-year-old recruit with Pakistani roots — Raheel Siddiqui of Taylor, Mich. — died after leaping from a stairwell landing that was nearly 40 feet high while running away from the same drill instructor who used the dryer. The instructor had just slapped Siddiqui before he jumped. Siddiqui’s death drew public scrutiny to a culture of harsh punishments at Parris Island — one that Marine officials were already examining, the documents show.

Last week, service officials announced that 20 members of Parris Island’s staff could face criminal charges or administrative discipline following the conclusion of three investigations into various abuse allegations. But the documents and an interview with a Marine official with knowledge of the investigations suggest dozens more Parris Island Marines could be implicated in the scandal.

My Dad despised the Marines. His encounters with them in Vietnam were not, let's say, uplifting.

When I was about seven, I told him I wanted to be in the Marines. He smacked me down pretty good on that one. (Not literally. he just gave me a piece of his mind regarding Marines). I ended up joining the Army, the way he did.

This harrassment of Marine recruits has to stop.

I humored the recruiter by going and seeing him but didn't really go past that point.

We've had family members in every service branch except the Marines.

I live next door to about 100,000 marines and wear a grey NAVY t-shirt to honor my dad who did 2 tours in the navy. He said I was probably going to end up in a fight with a marine some weekend... 3 years later and nothing even close to that has happened. I actually found a good workout buddy for a couple years who was in the marines

The number initially is 20, with the possibility of dozens more!!!

The only way that many can get away with this kind of action is if the chain of command, is either incompetent or looked the other way!

I'm voting for incompetent!!!

I'm all for good, hard, tough training. But the Marines need to make some big time changes. If parents can't send their kids to Parris Island and not be confident in their safety and well-being, then perhaps the time has come to close that base. I used to work with a 30 year Marine who bragged about his abuse of recruits when he was a DI. I think the USMC needs to re-think its ideas of what constitutes good leadership. Does a sergeant have to scream and yell all of the time? If so, that is weak leadership.

20. Female Marine drops out of infantry course

The only female officer enrolled in the Marine Corps' Infantry Officer's Course has dropped out after failing to complete two conditioning hikes last month, according to the Marine Corps' Training and Education Command.

"At this time, there are no female officers enrolled or slated to attend (the Infantry Officer's Course)," Marine spokesman Capt. Joshua Pena told CNN.

He added that 33 additional officers have been dropped from the course out of a starting class comprising 97 officers. The course started on July 6 and is scheduled to finish on September 20.

This was the female officer's second attempt at passing the course. She will now be given another specialization for her career as an officer in the Marines.

She wasn't "tough enough" to demonstrate her bigotry by assaulting and bullying people of a different religion? That appears to be a qualification for a long-time instructor who was in a position of trust.

They seriously need to consider closing the Marine Corps. There is no USMC mission the Army can't do, and the Army doesn't feel the need to run North Korean brainwashing camps disguised as initial training.

What exactly would they have to do in order to take on the task of providing amphibious combat units?

As it is, the Marines are a sub-branch of the Navy. Maybe it is the squid in me, but I think that is a good idea.

They need to fix what is broken, not break what DOES currently work.

The only reason the Army doesn't do it now, is the job was assigned exclusively to the Marines to keep the War Department from getting rid of the Corps after World War II. The easiest way to take on the task of amphibious warfare would be to absorb the three Marine divisions - which would retain the amphibious skills but get rid of the POW camp the Marines are running in South Carolina.
