Court records show Keith Scott's wife filed for restraining order
Source: WSOC-TV
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Police said that Keith Scott did have a loaded gun when Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Brentley Vinson shot and killed him last week, and on Monday, sources told Channel 9 that that gun was stolen.
Police sources said someone else stole the gun during a home break-in and later sold it to Scott.
Channel 9 also obtained a domestic violence protective order that Scott's wife took out on him last year.
The order, filed in Gaston County, said that Scott hit his child in the head with his fist, kicked his wife and threatened to kill them with his gun.

(2,004 posts)Once it is clearly demonstrated from the videos, Mr. Scott was not threatening the police and the police ignored his wife's pleas to calm down, their next step is to desperately dig up any information that will demonize the victim. I expected this to happen. It will get worse.
Thank you, Coolest Ranger, for your insights.

(46,340 posts)I saw this same technique in the Sherman Park, Milwaukee incident.
Guy WITH GUN who has police record for violence points gun at black cop.
Black cop shoots the dipshit.
Mob, NOT protest, gathers, destroys homes and businesses.
The "All cops is EEEEE-VIL!" crowd blames cops for riot.

(4,993 posts)being presented is tipping the scales away from "cop shoots unarmed black man" towards "armed suspect shot by police".
I am not sure how presentation of relevant facts is, as pointed out down thread, character assassination.
And, for the record, it kinda pisses me off when people intentionally mislead the public with bad information that ends up inciting violent protests.
When need to collectively take a deep breath when this stuff happens and wait for the emergence of the facts.

(4,993 posts)cred to jump to conclusions with the early "facts" (which sometimes turn out to be anything but...) and rally to the streets (you get to then claim the "I am a leader" flag) than to wait for the real facts to come to light and possibly miss the boat.

(4,490 posts)If they were building a case for a crime and arrested him. Instead he was targeted for reasons unrelated to his background and killed when the trigger happy police rapidly escalated a bad situation they created.

(455 posts)It isn't.
There is no indication that the cops knew this fact before shots were fired, so it could not have biased them. Dragging it out into the open now amounts to justification after the fact and slander of a dead disabled man.
Scott had a TBI from a motorcycle crash. He might not even be the same person cognitively that he was when the events leading to the restraining order occurred- his wife dropped the order a short time later citing that he was no longer a threat to the family. I couldn't find the date the restraining order was filed, but another article I saw put his accident in November.
Common side effects of *MILD* TBI include an inability to concentrate, difficulty with balance, vision disturbances, sensitivity to light and sound, memory loss, slow thinking and seizures. Without knowing the severity of his condition, even mild TBI will render you into the disabled category.
This was yet another mentally disabled American killed by a cop.

(3,212 posts)I don't think his cognitive impairment was on the serious side of the scale.

(455 posts)If he was driving, it rules out seizures. Doctors are generally required to report those to law enforcement so licenses can be revoked. That's pretty much it.
Confusion, mild IQ loss, loss of memory, becoming overwhelmed by flashing lights, disorientation under stress...... not so much. The problem with TBI is there is no visible scar or injury and at first glance, a person can appear to be acting normally. They aren't. Problems might not even trigger while under clinical evaluation in a nice serene doctor's office. But out in the real world and under stress?
It is no wonder that so many people with mental illnesses such as bipolar and schizophrenia are killed by police. You see it time and again with people who have cognitive impairments like TBI or severe autism. When people act outside of the predicted norm, it often needlessly results in a cop thinking someone is more dangerous than they actually are... and them firing.
This is why it is so important to universally train police how to respond to situations where a mental health or cognitive impairment is known.. studies show time and again that less people get hurt when this training is implemented... cops and citizens both.

(5,946 posts)people ignore or lie about symptoms or just don't recognize them as happening.
My mom had an accident just before the stroke that incapacitated her, she said she was over tired. She lived alone and refused to move in with me and kept driving. WHen she forgot how to drive through after another stroke and forgot how to talk, that is when I could take the keys away. This guy, you don't know if his symptoms were observed.

(4,642 posts)because of our past full of state sponsored murders of black men and women. It will be up to law enforcement to defend and prove their actions. Its what happens when a population looses faith in law enforcement and our justice system.
SpankMe
(2,963 posts)...the police knew none of his past when they were confronting him. So, digging up his past and framing it as an excuse for what the cops did is essentially time travel and a convenient re-sequencing of history.
The Scott event stands on its own. Police procedures need to be revised to bring down the number of black men being gunned down by cops. I'd bet a million bucks that if it was a white guy in Scott's place, they'd have negotiated with him, engaged in deescalation techniques and given him the benefit of the doubt throughout the whole episode. That's what authorities did with the Bundys.

(55,445 posts)where the decedent gets a more thorough background check than a prospective FBI agent... And everything negative gets printed, no matter how long ago it was or how irrelevant it is to the events which led to his/her death. Sooner or later, our collective consciousness starts to wonder if the decedent didn't have it coming after all, and whether the world is a better place without him/her... Good, old-fashioned 'retroactive justification'.
So just to spell it out as simply as I can, unless Keith Scott was harming/threatening his family and/or pointing a gun at police in the moments immediately before his death, I'll just file it under "smear/distortion", because it has JACK FUCKING SHIT TO DO WITH WHY HE HAD TO DIE.
