Panama Requests Former President Martinelli's Extradition From US
PANAMA,Sept 28 (BERNAMA- NNN-PRENSA LATINA)--Panama's Foreign Ministry confirmed today the extradition request made by the Supreme Court (SC) of former President Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014) from the United States, for his alleged responsibility for wiretapping crimes.
The request was presented yesterday in Washington by representatives of the Panamanian embassy in this country, following the completion of documents by the SC and a long process began on December 21st when all judges passed the request.
Harry Diaz, the prosecutor in the case, based his request on sufficient evidence linking the investigation on Martinelli to crimes described in the indictment for allegedly ordering the wiretapping of eleven of his rivals and also the disappearance of spy equipment.
. . .
Martinelli faces seven cases passed by the Supreme Court, which envisages sentences of 45 to 67 years in prison, but the question is whether the United States will extradite its former ally Martinelli to the Panamanian justice.
