COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) A Norwegian appeals court has dismissed a lawsuit seeking a legal guarantee to allow Edward Snowden to travel to Norway without risk of being extradited to the United States.
The Borgating court upheld Wednesday a ruling by a lower district court saying it cannot issue such a guarantee for someone who isn't present in Norway.
An Oslo law firm filed the lawsuit in April on behalf of the former National Security Agency contractor and the Norwegian chapter of PEN that had invited Snowden to receive its Ossietzky Prize in November. The literary group had appealed the Oslo district court June ruling.
Snowden, who is currently in Russia, faces U.S. charges that could land him in prison for up to 30 years for leaking details of a secret U.S. eavesdropping program.

Enjoy your Russian winter, Edward...
As it turns out, Snowden *WAS* available for comment today, and it's just as whiny as you'd expect since Norway didn't bend their law just to cater to his massive ego: https://twitter.com/Snowden/status/781184025113133057

(36,437 posts)It's not clear why some people think this is a legal gray area.
He is a fugitive from justice as of right now.

(26,293 posts)offers Russia the right incentive such as the US quietly dropping its objection to the Russian invasion of the Ukraine and then its annexation of the area it invaded and its very possible that such a deal could be made.
After all the US has little to no real interests in the region and they arent going to provide much real help to the Ukraine so they might decide to simply write off the entire area if it gives them Snowden.

(2,931 posts)No giant assumptions in that response, you must be employed by the US intelligence services to know all that. Which then means you just leaked state secrets, kinda like Snowden?

(26,293 posts)because if that was the case he could have simply fled to the Russian embassy in the first place.

After all Russia probably has got all the Intel they wanted from him so he has little value now which is probably why he is trying to find somewhere else to flee to for the long term.

(36,437 posts)The US does not seem to care enough about Snowden to make even minor deals for him, much less something as world historical as your example.
He's an ordinary fugitive from justice. He will be arrested and transported back to the US at some point, or he will come back willingly and turn himself in to the FBI. He's not going to go the Roman Polanski route, because he's really not Russian or European and there's a limit of everybody's patience. We'll see him plead out to some charge in the next two years or so.

(26,293 posts)A more likely one to happen is that eventually the US will capture a Russian agent here in the US and Russia will make a trade of Snowden for the agent.

(26,293 posts)Assuming Norway agrees with his claims he shouldnt have any problems getting the court to agree.

(2,001 posts)Me thinks Snowden better stay away from moving objects, And I don't think any movie is gonna help him in the real world. Russia is getting tired of his traitor ass, And wouldn't have anybody to answer to if Snowden had a un-pleasant demise. IMHO

(26,293 posts)crossover to Norway up near Nikel.
The problem is the Norway government wont agree to hear his plea for a safe haven until hes actually in their country and he doesnt want to go there unless he can get that guarantee.
Now some might say "But hes already safe in Russia why does he need a guarantee from Norway?" and the answer is because Russia hasnt given him that guarantee either which means if the US cuts a deal with Russia that Snowden might find himself in US custody which he is trying to avoid.
