BREAKING: Doug Applegate opens up 4-Point Lead Against Trumpian Darrell Issa in New Poll! (CA 49)
Source: Daily KOS
This does not surprise me. Colonel Applegates campaign has caught fire here at the north end of San Diego County, just outside Camp Pendleton. Meanwhile Issa is flooding radio, TV, and mailboxes with anti-Applegate propoganda because he has money to burn. But as the Colonel says, you cant buy votes.
No link yet to the poll, but here is an excerpt from the Applegate campaigns e-mail:
This poll puts us at 46 percent and Issa at 42 percent. The lead is still within the margin of error, but it is a very good sign. This poll proves that what weve been doing is working. The phone banks, canvassing, and outreach events have helped us connect with more voters. The ads weve been airing have been effectively sharing the truth about Issas shameful record.
Getting to this position hasnt been easy. There were the personal attacks against Dougs family and then Issa threatened to sue us over an ad he didnt like. Through it all we have persevered and come out even stronger.
Issa may have money on his side, but you cant buy votes. We have the truth on our side. The 49th district wants change and a representative who will look out for them not himself and who has the same values of integrity and equality and will listen to their concerns.

(17,390 posts)Darrell Issa was one of the first Californian Republicans to jump on the Donald Trump bandwagon.
http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-trumping-of-darrell-issa
On May 12th, while Donald Trump, Paul Ryan, and the Republican National Committee chairman, Reince Priebus, met at R.N.C. headquarters, in Washington, Representative Darrell Issa tried to figure out how to leave the building. The sidewalk in front was blocked by protesters and reporters, and Issa, who had recently endorsed Trump, expected to be harassed by them. I wish you had a back door, Issa said, according to a reporter inside who overheard the remark.
Issa, who is sixty-two, is one of the more colorful members of Congress. An Ohio native who was accused two times of car theft in the nineteen-seventies (Issa has denied the charges), he moved to Southern California in the mid-eighties and became a car-alarm magnate. After years as a major Republican donor, he won his congressional seat, in a conservative district near San Diego, in 2000. He is currently the wealthiest member of the House.
* * *
But in May, after Rubio left the race, Issa transferred his allegiance to Trump with an almost Chris Christie-like enthusiasm. At a May 27th Trump rally in San Diego, Issa compared Trump to Ronald Reagan. A few weeks earlier, he had published an op-ed in The Hill chastising fellow-Republicans for not backing Trump. The piece was headlined Memo to Bushes, Other G.O.P. Holdouts: Get on the Trump Train.
During his spring transformation into a Trump superfan, Issa may have calculated that his own primary, on June 7th, would benefit from a surge of Southern California Trump voters. California uses a so-called jungle-primary system, in which candidates of all parties run in the same race, and the top two candidates advance to the general election.

(1,433 posts)and I have made two generous contributions to Doug Applegate's campaign. I hope you have done the same. If you can't make a financial contribution-volunteer to phone bank, register voters or put in a few hours in the campaign office.

(44 posts)I live in San Clemente and I'm in the 49th district. I've been getting Issa postcards with Applegate's name on it and at first I thought it was for Doug Applegate. After reading it I realized it was marketing for Issa. It would say something like Pelosi approved Doug Applegate, and then list some negative things about him. But the thing is if your a liberal like me the whole piece was completely positive. Wish I didn't throw them away so I could post them.
Point I want to make is that Applegate had no name recognition and was doing no marketing. Then Issa's sends this terrible idea of marketing plan out to everyone in the district and all of the democrat's in the district now become familiar with him. Applegate doesn't have to spend anything and Issa give's him free marketing. Republicans would be voting for Issa no matter what so why get the Applegate's name out there?
Because it was a terrible campaign strategy. Go Doug Applegate!

(2,574 posts)The first one was terrific, tying Trump and Issa's financial narcissism, greed & corruption together. And the second one nails Issa for voting against 911 First Responders, ending with "Darryl Issa said he'd done enough for something that was simply a plane crash. Issa and the Tea Party Republicans, they turn their back on all of us." Mike Drop.

(11,576 posts)After seeing this post, I went to Doug Applegate's election site and read about his philosophy and positions. For a moment, I just imagined how different our country would be if congress were filled with representatives like Doug, instead of the right-wing zealots that populate it today. We would all be so much better off. If I lived in California, I would be working for his campaign!
