House arrest denied for convicted Pa. monsignor

Source: AP

By JOANN LOVIGLIO, Associated Press – 34 minutes ago

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia monsignor convicted of child endangerment for sending a priest suspected of abuse to a new parish will remain behind bars until he's sentenced.

Judge M. Teresa Sarmina agreed Thursday with prosecutors who say Monsignor William Lynn should be treated like any other felon and remain jailed until his sentencing hearing.

Lynn's attorneys say their client isn't a flight risk and argued for his release on house arrest. But prosecutors say other defendants in Lynn's situation wouldn't be accommodated the same way.

Sarmina did approve a defense request to move sentencing up from Aug. 13 to July 24. Lynn faces 3½ to seven years in prison.

...but did nothing to stop the child molestation.

More than a year after Msgr. Lynn took the helm of the clergy office, reports started to surface about allegations of priest sex abuse from past decades. The priest and an aide began an investigation of priest personnel files and in locked document archives at the archdiocesan headquarters in Philadelphia. They wanted to assess, Bergstrom said, "how bad is this problem?"

Their result, he said, were 323 files from which they compiled 35 names of priests with accusations or credible evidence of sexual abuse.

Their memo of Feb. 18, 1994, attached a list with the names, which was sent up through the archdiocesan administration of the time to Msgr. Lynn's superiors, including Cardinal Bevilacqua.

Although the cardinal ordered the memo shredded, a copy was placed in a locked box not discovered until 2006 and not produced for the court in the trial until recently.

He belongs in prison for a very, very long time, along with the rest of the Church hierarchy who knew about this but did nothing...

Who might/would say that being in prison will EARN the guy many, many loving situations with the many loving and understanding inmates. However, kind DU'ers take note; there was that 'study' published, oh about 2 years or so by now, by a Christian Conservative that positively and definitely 'proved' that there is NO rape going on behind bars in these U.S of A.
