Donald Trump Receives First Two Daily Newspaper Endorsements

The Santa Barbara News-Press of Santa Barbara, Ca., and the St. Joseph News-Press of St. Joseph, Mo. have declared on their editorial pages that they endorse Donald Trump for President.
We endorse Trump for president in the belief he can bring about fundamental change not alone, but in partnership with his party and a coalition of others drawn from every walk of life who think we can do better than what government has offered under eight years of President Obama, read the St. Joseph News-Press
These two papers are standing alone, for the moment against unprecedented opposition from every other daily newspaper in America so far which has declared. The Arizona Republic, Dallas Morning News, and Cincinnati Enquirer are among a number of major papers around the country which are bucking long traditions of supporting the GOP nominee for President to instead endorse Hillary Clinton. USA Today, for the first time in its history, weighed in by urging readers to vote for anyone but Trump.
The St. Joseph News-Press counters by saying that Trump, while not flawless, is better than his democratic rival.

(102,278 posts)That is rural farm country in that area and is certainly populated by conservative farmers, but they also know a total fake when they see one. So, I'm a bit heartened to see the pushback.

(1,910 posts)2 very small papers all of a sudden decide to endorse Trump, in the midst of his free fall? Yeah sure. Sounds like something got done behind the scenes.

(5,376 posts)Her husband tried his best to talk them out of it, but to no avail. We all feel sick--they really are very nice people, but have gone off the rails on this one. Future communication is gonna be tough for me, but knowing the St. Joseph News-Press endorsed Trump might explain their decision. Doesn't matter--they will do what they choose, but my respect for them has pretty much plummeted. I'll get over it, I'm sure. Right now, totally bummed!
As for the Santa Barbara News-Press--double ugh!

(7 posts)I am saddened by this endorsement but I am not shocked. I went to high school in St. Joe and have very deep family roots there. It is a blue collar white working class town. Once upon a time, it was a very Democratic town but that began to change in the 90's; however, my 65 year old dad who voted for Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II is voting for Hillary (albeit not with much enthusiasm ). St. Joseph is a very depressing city and has been for years now. This is one more reason I'm happy to be in San Diego now.

The number one thing he's demonstrated so far is that he will never work with his party.

Trump has proven he is unable to work with anyone - the Republican leadership for example, the media for example. As for "others drawn every walk of life," he has mocked, insulted or threatened people from every walk of life, from fellow billionaires, to Muslims, Mexicans, women, people of color, people with disabilities. I repeat, the editors must be F###ing idiots.

(90,690 posts)I no longer know or care what the circulation is, because it no longer includes us. She got rid of their oldest and best reporters, some being escorted out under guard. It went on and on.
Well, enough. The original family-owned newspaper was known for having done some crucial investigative journalism regarding the John Birch Society, but that was long long ago.
