Trump proposes term limits for Congress

Source: The Hill

Donald Trump on Tuesday called for term limits in Congress as part of his new ethics reform proposal.

"If I’m elected president I will push for a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress,” Trump said at a rally in Colorado Springs, Colo. "Decades of failure in Washington and decades of special interest dealing must and will come to an end.”

"Not only will it end our government corruption, but we will end the economic stagnation that we’re in right now — no growth," Trump added of the proposal.

Trump released a five-point ethics plan Monday night in an effort to "drain the swamp" in Washington.

...but it's nice to have backup.

It turns the legislators into pass-throughs, while lobbyists and staff-for-hire stick around. They have the institutional memory and thorough knowledge of the rules to get things done, or keep things from being done.

It simply moves the actual ability to do things farther from accountability to the voters.

Term limits were enacted in 2002 and it has been a nightmare!

Lobbyists have more influence because after their term is finished, they go to work for the lobbyist firms and then write legislation and hand it off to clueless newbies.
Republicans pushed they idea and they love it, because they have the money to promote news names every coupld of years. Incumbancy works in the favor of Democrats. Republicans strength is in running for office, and Democrats strength is in governing.

Aside from all that, when they work together for a long time, they build relationships, respect for each other and they used to work together.

When the inexperienced tea party candidates got elected, it created almost exactly what began here in 2003 in MO. A lot of progressives support this, but if we think congress is dysfuntional now term limits would make it way worse.

It leads to incessant turnover, lack of institutional knowledge, zero incentive for people in different parties to forge alliances and work together, and a fat cat contract with a lobbying firm afterwards as a quid pro quo.

I have never understood the appeal. Maybe you get rid of a few bad players in the short term, but who wants to bring in a completely inexperienced Congress every two to four years? How does that serve our interests? Would you get rid of a mechanic or a dentist or a doctor that you liked after two years and bring in someone completely green who didn't know you the way the old one did?

The lack of term limits (and gerrymandering) is what keeps Republicans a float. Imagine what America would be like if more and more people were tossed out of office due to term limits and someone new came up. Consider how diverse the nation is and how that diversity is increasing, rapidly I'd like to add.

The Goldwater conservative revolution is dying right now, the next generations, starting with millennials, think its crap. Put term-limits into the mix and Conservative America is dead.

So by all means, Donnie, push for term limits. Be my guest.

Term limits were enacted in 2002 and we lost the majority right away. Now they have a 116 seats in the House and we have 45 plus 1 independent.

The Senate is 24 Rs - 7 Ds with 3 vacancies to be filled this year

If someone is no longer a good representative, the voters should be the ones who decide that, not some artificial (and currently unconstitutional) rule. If someone is a good representative, such as John Lewis, they should be allowed to run for as long as the voters keep voting them in. Why deny voters that right? Term limits are a vote of no confidence in democracy. It was a right wing reaction to FDR, and is always pushed hardest by right wingers...for a reason. Right wingers have more money and can start a campaign as a newbie more easily. Lefties tend not to have money, but gain popular support while in office, and use that popularity to stay in office, despite often being outspent by their right win opponents.

and your small hand fingers in there pant pockets, it's called VOTING, got that, let me repeat it one more time it's called VOTING, you know the system that your republican ilk have been trying to eviscerate.

But then again you are going around and saying the election is rigged, either or there donnie, what is it.

And if you would just sit down and think about it, if you get in power your republican ilk would further the damage the voting full blown with a "means test", look at what the right wing supreme court did.

And as for special interests, what do you have to say about the NRA or how about the special interest supporting the destruction in North Dakota, there donnie. The same bankers that funded your corruption and bankruptcy in Atlantic City----------no thanks.

And if you wanted to get the corruption out of government just think of what Bernie Sanders did, he got $27.00 on average and did not accept any money from bankers, hedge funds or from the enablers such as the Koch's, the Popes and anyone else from Wall Street bankers

Some of the most powerful members of Congress are ranking members and black because blacks and Dems are gerrymandered into districts so unbalanced a Republican will never unseat them. So this.
