Anthony Weiner checks into sex addiction rehab clinic: Daily Mail

Source: Reuters citing Daily Mail

Disgraced former U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner has checked into a rehab facility that treats sex addiction, the DailyMail.com reported on Wednesday.

The online version of the British newspaper said electronic devices are banned at the facility, which separates men from women and treats a range of addictions related to cyber sex, exhibitionism and anonymous sex and other acts. The facility was not named in the report.

Reuters could not independently verify the report. Weiner could not be reached for comment.

Federal prosecutors and New York police announced last month they were investigating Weiner following a separate report by the DailyMail.com that he engaged in sexually explicit cellphone and online messages with a 15-year-old girl from North Carolina.

I hope they can help the guy. He's probably going to need permanent follow up care.

And 'sex addiction' is clearly recognized as a psych issue, because there are places where it can be treated, such as https://www.recoveryranch.com/treatment-programs/sexual-recovery/

They treat Serial infidelity, Love addiction, Intimacy disorders, Compulsive masturbation, Cyberporn abuse and porn addiction, Anonymous sex, Sexual boundary problems, Voyeurism, Exhibitionism

Mr Weiner suffers from a problem with Exhibitionism, if not more.

But "sex addiction" isn't a real diagnosis, no matter what some rehab facility that wants to part people with their money says.

Adventure therapy, experiential therapies, trauma-focused therapies, 12-step principles and 12-step alternatives, equine therapy, spirituality practices, Native American healing traditions, mindfulness and more — whatever combination of approaches work best for each individual client, they will find it here.

That's not medicine, that's scout camp for adults.

It activates the brain reward system sorta like cocaine someone can definitely be addicted to that. Addiction is usually considered if it leads to problems in their personal life, they keep doing the same thing despite the adverse consequences.

criteria.

That's also a really surface level understanding of addiction, which is complicated.

Sex addiction as a diagnosis emerged when people in 12 step programs for drug and alcohol addiction decided to apply the 12 step model to other problems in their lives. Sexual acting out is common among addicts, particularly when they have untreated bipolar, borderline personality, etc. The evidence is pretty clear that 12 step programs don't even work for addictions, let alone wholly invented diagnoses.

Reuters and the Daily Beast are both carrying this, but both cite the Mail.

I felt Reuters had enough credibility to warrant posting this.

We'll see soon if the original source holds up.

Weiner is a narcissist who feels that he has done nothing wrong. He's a pedophile who is playing the poor victim.

He'll do it again when he gets out - he'll just make sure he's more stealthy. This is all theater for any legal troubles that might arise later, and for public opinion.

...everyone is addicted to sex. His problem is different. If he knew his texting partner was 15-years-old, he has an emotional disturbance or some other psychological problem... assuming his cognitive levels are normal for an adult.
