Believe it! Chicago Cubs win 2016 World Series
Source: CNN
(CNN)The billy goat curse is dead.
The Chicago Cubs are World Series champions at long last, winning their first Fall Classic in 108 years, defeating the Cleveland Indians in 10 innings 8-7 in Game 7 at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
Ben Zobrist's RBI double off Bryan Shaw drove in pinch runner Albert Almora, Jr., and Miguel Montero's single with the bases loaded brought home Anthony Rizzo for what proved the winning run.
The Cubs hadn't won a World Series since 1908, which was the longest drought in baseball. They also broke the curse set the last time they got this far 71 years ago.
On October 6, 1945, a month after the end of World War II, a Chicago tavern owner named William "Billy" Sianis went to Wrigley Field, intending to attend Game 4 of the World Series with his pet goat, Murphy. But, according to the Billy Goat Tavern website, while both had tickets, the goat was denied entry. No animals were allowed in the ballpark, plus Murphy smelled bad.

(65,058 posts)I still think Bartmann is a silly little boy, but he's taken far too much abuse, and since the "curse" is lifted, he doesn't have to hide anymore. So, it's a good time for the Cubs to invite him back.

(38 posts)Congratulations Cubs! We Red Sox Fans knew only too well what it was like to wander in the wilderness though for only 86 years as opposed to your 106. We know how you felt as well as how you feel now. This is a great time for you! Enjoy it as much as we did in 2004! Just a shame Ernie Banks isn't around to see it.

(5,240 posts)I am glad I lived to see this. I have been a fan since Ron Santo, Billy Williams and Ernie Banks were on the field. My daughter still lives there and the noise outside woke her up. There is joy in the windy city tonight! I live in WI, and I am volunteering for the Feingold and Clinton campaigns...... it's close but I think we'll get the win.

(1,945 posts)What an incredible game! I have not paid any attention to baseball since I was a kid and a Dodger fan. Just lost interest years ago. This year I hear the Cubs are in the WS and I know my sister, who is now in hospice, is a long time Cubbie fan. So to support her fandom I watched the beginning of the series with her. I had to come home before it ended and watched the rest on my own, and really got into it. So tonight's win is sweet for many reasons. I know sister had a good night tonight. Thanks Cubs!!

(70,113 posts)havent been much of a baseball fan because it was tough w little kids to even find the time to watch. was married to a lifelong sox fan, and liked them as my cub feelings went down mostly because of what has happened to the hood in my lifetime, always clogged w drunk suburbanites. really enjoyed their winning run.
but my mom would have been so happy to see this. she was raised out on grace street, on the west side, and rode her bike to the park just to hang around and hope for balls. her dad kept score of the day games and told her about them when she got home from school.
so for her i watched the games. and they were fun. especially last night. wow. what a good game.

(30,742 posts)The World Champion Chicago Cubs. The World Champion Chicago Cubs.
I can't believe it.
They couldn't just win. They had to make it extra innings, with a rain delay thrown in. What a sloppy mess of a win! All that must have been the last dying gasp of the Billy Goat curse. It was a strong curse and did not go quietly.
I spoke to everyone in my family tonight who is a Cubs fan. They are scattered across the country, but everyone was watching and listening. Only my son, a season ticket holder, is downtown in Chicago tonight. They are trying to get to Wrigley Field, but the streets are jammed.
OMG. OMG. OMG.

(41,831 posts)Just hope your team doesn't trade away the best players like others have done in the past, when winning the world series. I think we never lost a thing by losing panda, but than we may have gained a few good players that need some developing. Solid farm system helps!
I wonder if the RAIDERS will make the SUPERBOWL this year? That would be fantastic!

(11,936 posts)Going to game 7, taking it to the 10th inning and a 1 run difference making the score, thats some straight up Hollywood shit right there. Neither team has any reason to feel an ounce of shame. That was something else.

(948 posts)Just for a second, try and imagine that the Cubs lose this one in extra innings...
Joe Maddon would have been (deservedly) run out of town. Or worse.
It was like he was TRYING to lose the game.

(948 posts)ABSOLUTLEY....the guy is a baseball genius...on another level.
I wish the Detroit Lions could somehow hire him to run their 'franchise'..I can wish...
But someone, anyone, please tell me the baseball logic for trying a squeeze bunt in this situation:
1) Tie Game, LATE innings
2) 1 out
3) batter has full count
4) Again, batter has 2 strikes.
5) Did i mention he had 2 strikes already?
6) Guy on deck and and next guy are great hitters who are currently hot.
And you try a squeeze bunt? I played a little baseball - one of the first rules I learned and remembered is NEVER, EVER bunt with 2 strikes....
These are the major leagues here...incredible.
I just got a horrible feeling that in that situation last night we had a manager who was trying to be super smart and edgy who wanted to win the game so he could get a majority of the credit and shine if his stupid move paid off...
To me, that is an error in judgement that should cost that person their job - good thing they won.
Again, glad they won, but I want to hear the baseball logic for that decision, because I don't see one.
bathroommonkey76
(3,827 posts)Could've been a blown sign... The hitter could've forgotten the count.
Major league players have screwed up a lot in baseball history-- Look at Bill Buckner. lol
