FBI leaders knew about new emails for weeks

Source: Washington Post via Times Picayune

Senior FBI officials were informed about the discovery of new emails potentially relevant to the investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server at least two weeks before Director James Comey notified Congress, according to federal officials familiar with the investigation.

The officials said that Comey was told that there were new emails before he received a formal briefing last Thursday, although the precise timing is unclear.

The information goes beyond the details provided in the letter that Comey sent to lawmakers last week declaring that he was restarting the inquiry into whether Clinton mishandled classified material during her tenure as secretary of state. He wrote in the Friday letter that "the investigative team briefed me yesterday" about the additional emails.

The people familiar with the investigation said that senior officials had been informed weeks earlier that a computer belonging to former congressman Anthony Weiner, D-New York, contained emails potentially pertinent to the Clinton investigation. Clinton's top aide, Huma Abedin, shared the computer with her husband, from whom she is now separated.

The timing of the release of the decision not to charge HRC in early July
seems to have enraged the right and assured more drip-drip can be
manufactured against her at the last minute, which is exactly what Comey
has done. If he had gone full throttle in July, HRC might not be the nominee,
though how a Socialist would fare when bombarded by the right is not
very clear. Personally I think no better and possibly worse.

In my view this is using a Federal agency to play political favorites, though
truly no matter what Comey did it would affront some and appease others.
A lose-lose proposition for him. Even saying nothing and delaying the action
would cause friction. But you can bet the Right has set the timetable and agenda
on this issue.

The FBI says they have "new email". I doubt it. It sounds like they have a back-up file of Abedin's email address. That would be a duplicate copy of old email. The FBI already has Clinton's email server and the email addresses of both Clinton and Abedin. The only thing they don't have is email that Clinton deleted. But if any of that was sent to Abedin they would already have that from her Inbox unless Clinton and Abedin coordinated to delete specific emails. This, I believe, is what the FBI is looking for. A coordinated purge of email by Clinton and Abedin. Because a delete would not impact the back-up file anything deleted between when the back-up was taken and the deleting took place would be their "new email" but it is only speculation that such email exists.

The meta data is what the FBI needs to be looking at. Both for this file and a file from Abedin's email address. You sort both files by date/timestamp and do a two file match. The only thing of interest would be an email on this back-up file that does not have a match from Abedin's email address file, indicating email that had been deleted after the back-up was taken - their smoking gun. This is a task that shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours to perform and because it is based on meta data it could have been completed 3 weeks ago. Something just isn't adding up here and it smells pretty rotten.

"Comey did not notify Congress as soon as he learned about the emails because officials wanted additional information before proceeding, the officials said."

It sounds to me like "the officials" were looking in all of the wrong places because they had all of the information they needed. That and the need for a good IT person to explain to them what they have. I look for nothing to come of these "new emails" but we have two new victims - the then 15-year old that was outed by this revelation and Hillary Clinton.
