Paul LePage wants college students voting in Maine to be residents
Source: Sun Journal
Gov. Paul LePage said Monday he welcomes college students who want to become Maine residents and vote here
But he didnt sound especially welcoming.
LePage warned students not to vote in Maine and back home in another state.
Casting ballots in two different states is voter fraud, which is why Maine law requires anyone voting here to establish residency here, the governor said in a statement issued Monday.

(10,476 posts)I believe that our esteemed Trump-wannabe is lying...
Students have a choice about where to register to vote.
School address:
Students attending college in Maine may register at their school address. You must plan to return after temporary absences, like summer break, but do not have to plan to reside at that address permanently.
Permanent address:
Students may choose to register or remain registered at a permanent address in Maine or outside the state. In this case, students may need to vote by absentee ballot.
You may only be registered and vote in one location.

(466 posts)Paige's comments are clearly to intimidate University of Maine students in Orono. Maine and Maine's 1st congressional district are solid for Clinton but Maine's 2nd looks like Trump will win.

They (the Republicans) made a big stink Bates college students voting in the last Lewiston mayoral election and they tried to change the date of the voting to the summer when a lot of them wouldn't be around, but I don't think that ever panned out. One of the people leading that effort up to change that date to keep college students from voting was 20 year old Republican guy who was one of the candidates for mayor. They will throw their own peers under the bus for political gain.
This is truly despicable though. I woke up to hearing this story on the radio this morning and it really pissed me off.

(6,496 posts)I bet the Republicans would love to have the little kids voting. It is very easy to sway their opinions. Republicans don't like young, educated adults voting. That's bad news for them.

(6,496 posts)The fliers at Bates college were wrong though. They do not need to get a Maine license 30 days prior to voting if they want to vote in Maine. Given that Maine hasn't complied with Real ID Act, I can't see why they'd want to give up the license for the state they lived in before. That flier was clearly misinformation designed to prevent young people from voting.

(22,877 posts)They tried to require college student voters be residents then, too, but we were advised to it was legal for us to check the box that said we were residents. Nixon won anyway, but I did my part. I was a student at Bates College.
