Pence's D.C. neighbors troll him with pride flags

The new neighbors of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence are welcoming the vice president-elect to their Northwest Washington neighborhood with special decorations dedicated specifically to him: gay pride flags.
Several houses on Pences block in Washingtons Chevy Chase neighborhood have put up rainbow pride flags since the vice president-elect moved in, according to D.C. ABC affiliate WJLA-TV. Pence is living in the neighborhood temporarily until he is sworn in as vice president, when he will move into the official vice presidential residence on the ground of the U.S. Naval Observatory.
Pence has a history of opposing the gay community, both nationally and in his home state. As a congressman in 2006, he supported a constitutional amendment to define marriage as the union between a man and a woman, saying in a speech that gay marriage would bring about "societal collapse." He also opposed the repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy that prohibited gay service members from serving openly.
As governor of Indiana, he signed the controversial "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" that opponents said would have allowed discrimination against LGBT individuals in his state. Under pressure, Pence later signed legislation that amended the bill to prevent discrimination.

The Chevy Chase neighborhood where Vice President-elect Mike Pence has recently rented a house is being decked out with more than twinkling lights and pine wreaths.
There are at least six gay pride flags hanging around the upper Northwest block where Pence moved last week, according to WJLA. Pence's new neighbors say they have ordered the flags in colorful protest to his anti-gay policies.
The flags are a respectful message showing, in my case, my disagreement with some of [Pence's] thinking, neighbor Ilse Heintzen told WJLA. I have no idea what [the Vice-President Elect] will think about, but I hope he will change his mind.
Pence has been widely criticized by the LGBTQ community for promoting so-called "conversion therapy," a widely discredited psychotherapy practice of trying to change someones sexual orientation or gender identity, as well as his record of opposing gay rights. More than two dozen homeowners around the Indiana governor's mansion have also displayed pride flags and other anti-Pence signs.
