NAACP Leaders Arrested Following Sit-In To Protest Sessions' AG Nomination

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published JANUARY 4, 2017, 10:18 AM EDT

Six people, including the national president and CEO of the NAACP, were arrested Tuesday night after an hours-long sit-in at Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) Mobile, Alabama office. They were protesting Sessions' nomination to be President-elect Donald Trump's attorney general.

NAACP President Cornell William Brooks posted a picture of what he said were mug shots of the six people who were arrested on his Twitter page early Wednesday morning, writing "After the @jeffsessions sit-in, these mugshots aren't pretty but they're pictures of @NAACP determination. #RestoreTheVRA & #stopsessions".

AL.com reported that, in addition to Brooks, five other people were arrested on charges of second-degree criminal trespassing. The arrestees included Benard Simelton, the president of the NAACP's Alabama state conference; Devon Crawford, a fellow at the NAACP; Lizzetta McConnell, the president of the NAACP's Mobile chapter; Stephen Green, the national director of the NAACP's youth and college division; and Joe Keffer.

According to the same report, about 30 people were participating in the sit-in at Sessions' office at one point.

Go sit in some office you dont belong in and get arrested. Wow that really worked.

Yea but it might have people talking about it in a negative way that makes democrats look bad and crazy. Could impact voting.

If we went with your assertion, my ass would still be sitting at the fucking back of the bus*.

I was planning to go to standing rock and possibly get arrested, but Obama finally stepped in.
