Ryan Bucks Trump, Says Congress Will Not Raise Tariffs

Source: Roll Call

Speaker Paul D. Ryan, in a break from President-elect Donald Trump, said Wednesday that Congress is not going to increase taxes on imports and exports.

“We’re not going to be raising tariffs,” Ryan said on “The Hugh Hewitt Show.”

Trump has called for a “big border tax” on companies that leave the United States but continue to sell their goods here.

Ryan said “the secret” to getting businesses to stay in the country is to level the playing field on taxes, lowering taxes for businesses, not increasing them.

I hope you piss him off enough that he vetoes the repeal of the ACA because it contains your Medicare destruction clause and he wants to hurt you as payback for insufficient fealty and loyalty. That would be a win/win for Americans and from such a surprising source. That would probably be the one and only time I would actually support anything at all that Drumpf does.

8. You really think Trump intended to even honor the tariff promises? LOL

He clearly never intended to do that and only used it as a campaign slogan and Ryan knows this, sure they might try a sham show of Trump being angry with Ryan and Ryan pretending to have grown a spine but it will be an act and not real.

Before peasants revolt, they have to be led...because they lack the basic thought process to figure out they've been screwed!

That's how peasants revolt, look at Russia and China as examples...if not for Lenin and Mao...the peasants would have just accepted their lot in life!

Well, now it's the turn of the American peasants, only the Republicans have made sure that they don't have leaders to push them to revolt, the Tea Party at one time may have been capable...but now that many of them have become part of the establishment...they are not going to kill the cash cow!

So, American peasants will just slog along and will grumble and complain, but come the midterms, those peasants are going to re-elect the very same people who are pissing down their backs and calling it lemonade!!!

slaps a tariff on goods, those taxes get passed off on the consumers of those goods. The corporations that import them don't pay a cent. Or, more likely, he's counting on the fact that his cult of rubes don't understand this.

American consumers, big business, "drain the swamp" constituents, and any citizens with half a brain and recognize policy cannot be dictated on Twitter - all before Day One!

75% of American voting-age citizens are already celebrating the shortest term ever!

came forward about his treatment of them so far he hasnt dont shit about that.
Oh we might see them go through the motions of "trying" to pass tariffs but it will be defeated because the Republicans in thee House and Senate know very well that it would be a bad idea but that wont stop them from trying to milk it like they milked repealing Obamacare to rally their base behind.

with this nonsense of their conflicting statements about what they plan to do and the media's insistence that they are "united". But then that is why they are doing it - to keep people off guard so they can sneak in their real agenda.

First of all because of his conflicting statements it WAS never a sure thing that Trump would use protectionism as a policy. But even if he DID decide to go along with his campaign promises and try to reverse globalization, the right-wing Congress won't allow it to happen. 90% of the Congress IN BOTH PARTIES are globalists and protectionism and restraint of "free trade" is an anathema to them.

Either way though, this will be a dust-up between sectors of the bourgeoisie, basically net importers against net exporters. Don't expect the people to win no matter which sector actually wins the policy battle.
